Hanoi joins UNESCO Creative Cities Network

The government of Hanoi held a ceremony on December 13 to formally announce that the Vietnamese capital city is joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung, Hanoi Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung and Chief representative of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam Michael Croft.

A performance to celebrate Hanoi joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

The network was created in 2004 with the goal of using cultural and creative resources as the foundation for sustainable urban development. To date, the UCCN has granted membership to 246 cities around the world.

As a culturally rich city, Hanoi applied to join the network in the field of design and its application was approved in October 2019.

To celebrate the joining, the Hanoi government has opened a festival on folk culture in contemporary life, honouring and promoting creative designs based on folk cultural heritage and knowledge.

The festival sees the participation of hundreds of artisans from creative trade villages such as Van Phuc silk, Bat Trang ceramics, Ngu Xa bronze casting and Ha Thai lacquerware.

The festival, which will run until December 15, also features folk arts in contemporary life and performance of intangible culture.
