Passengers scan tickets to ride the Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro train, November 2021.

The recent surge in Covid-19 cases has caused the number of commuters to fall but students and workers with season tickets have not abandoned it and their number is in fact gradually rising, he said.

When the service first began, they accounted for only 10 percent of passengers, but the rate has increased to 20 percent now and would rise further when more schools and universities reopen once Covid-19 is under control, he said.

The metro began operation on Nov. 6.

It is one of the 10 lines planned for Hanoi by 2030 with a total length of 417 kilometers, 82 percent of it above ground and the rest underground.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the metro is making a major contribution to getting people to use public transport, easing congestion, saving travel time and reducing pollution.
