Hanoi suspends entertainment activities to mourn fire victims

Hanoi has suspended all cultural, sports, and entertainment activities from Thursday to Saturday as the city mourns the deaths of people in the apartment building fire.

The city administration has informed district authorities that a memorial service would be held for the deceased on Monday morning.

Fire engulfed a mini-apartment building in an alley off Khuong Ha Street in Thanh Xuan District late Tuesday night.

It was officially confirmed on Wednesday that 56 people died and 37 others were injured.

Of the deceased, 10 were children.

It was the deadliest fire in Vietnam in the 21 years since the one at ITC shopping mall in HCMC that killed 60 people in 2002.

According to the Hanoi Department of Health, of the 37 injured in the fire, 36 are still receiving treatment and six are in critical condition.

The owner of the building, Nguyen Quang Minh, has been arrested and is being investigated for violating fire safety regulations.

The city has aided VND37 million (US$1,530) to the families of the deceased and VND12.4 million to the injured people.

Those hospitalized are provided treatment free of charge.
