Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide pays official visit to Vietnam

Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide and his spouse have arrived in Hanoi, beginning an official visit to Vietnam from October 18-20 at the invitation of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his spouse.

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide is accompanied by Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Sakai Manabu, Special Advisors to the Prime Minister and the Prime Minister’s Executive Secretaries, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Head of the Secretariat of the Japanese National Security Council and Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Yamada Takio.

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide was born on December 6, 1948 in Akita Prefecture. He graduated with a Bachelor of Law from Hosei University. In April 1975, he became secretary to a member of the House of Representatives. He was elected to the Yokohama City Council in April 1987 and elected to the House of Representatives in October 1996.

From May 2001, he held various posts including Deputy Secretary General of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (LDP), Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Vice Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Deputy Chairperson of Diet Affairs Committee of the LDP, and Senior Vice-Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications.

From September 2006, he was named as Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications. He was later appointed as leader of the LDP’s Election Strategy Committee in 2007, leader of the Committee on Rules and Administration of the House of Representatives in 2010, Chairperson of the LDP’s Party Organization and Campaign Headquarters in 2011.

From September 2012, he was Executive Acting Secretary-General of the LDP and also became Chief Cabinet Secretary in December 2012.

He was elected President of the LDP on September 14, 2020, and Prime Minister of Japan on September 16, 2020.
