Vocalists from the HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera perform in Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute, which will be restaged at the HCM City Opera House on March 31.

The opera, with a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder, tells the love story of Prince Tamino and Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night. After Pamina is held in captivity under the high priest Sarastro, the Queen of the Night persuades Tamino to rescue his daughter.

The Magic Flute premiered in 1791 in Vienna and has been staged by hundreds of theatre companies in the world, such as the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris, and Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Directed by French-German musician David Herman, the play was first introduced in HCM City in 2014.

The opera will be choreographed by HBSO choreographer Nguyen Phuc Hung, and will be sung in German and spoken in Vietnamese.

The performance will feature soprano Cho Hae Ryong as Pamina, Pham Trang as Prince Tamino, and Pham Khanh Ngoc as Queen of the Night.

The multi-lingual singer Derek Anthony, founder of the Music & Drama Institute in Hong Kong, will play Sarastro.

German conductor and vocal master Askan Siegfried Geisler will lead the performance.
