Musician Do Hong Quan and songs about Bac Giang

Updated: 12:27, 21/10/2022
(BGO) - Assoc. Prof., musician Do Hong Quan, President of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations, was highly valued by the music circle for his instrumental and stage music works, and film soundtracks. He also made a mark with the role of Cuoi in the movie "Thang Cuoi" directed by Do Minh Tuan in 1989.

Recently, he agreed to participate in the Music and Photography Camp of Bac Giang province with 42 musicians from the Vietnam Composers’ Association and the Bac Giang provincial Literature and Arts Association.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to accompany the musicians during their field trip and listen to musician Do Hong Quan sharing his feelings and memories about Bac Giang in a simple and touching way.

In the delegation’s field trip to Yen Dung district in early June, while waiting for other musicians who were visiting vegetable and grape gardens, Quan told the driver to take him back to Xuan Phu commune to find his old memories.

Musician Quan had studied music since the age of 9. During the years of resistance war, he and his friends had to evacuate to many places, from Yen Dung district in Bac Giang to Van Dinh and Phung (former Ha Tay province) and then to Hiep Hoa district of Bac Giang.

The delegation came to Yen Dung district and then went back to Tay Yen Tu (Western Yen Tu) region in Son Dong district to enjoy the scenery of Tay Yen Tu spiritual-ecological tourist area. They took a boat around Khuon Than lake in Luc Ngan district, listened to folk songs of the San Chi ethnic group, and enjoyed quan ho (love duet) melodies in Viet Yen district.

After the field trip, despite being very busy, musician Do Hong Quan still spent time writing two latest songs dedicated to Bac Giang, namely "Thuong nguoi khuc hat dan ca” (Love you, folk songs) and "Di trong cau hat dan ca” (Go with folk songs).

The names of the songs seem to be the same, but the lyrics and melody are completely different. For "Thuong nguoi khuc hat dan ca", he took the poetic ideas of Pham The Minh with a gentle melody and high technical tempo. Meanwhile, "Di trong cau hat dan ca" features a sentimental, deep melody.

Just reading the lyrics, I saw his affection for the land of Bac Giang. This was one of 11 new songs about Bac Giang during the provincial Music - Photography Camp performed in the evening of October 8 in an art programme themed "Bright forever, Bac Giang".

Most of the audience in Bac Giang often mention the song "Gui ve Song Luc nui Huyen” (Send love to Luc River and Huyen Mountain) by musician Do Hong Quan. Besides, he also set to music the poem "Song Thuong toc dai" (The long-hair girl on Thuong River) of poet Hoang Nhuan Cam.

The visits to Bac Giang have connected the musician to this land more. Another place in Bac Giang that Quan often mentions is Cau Den hamlet in Tan Yen - where his father Do Nhuan and mother Nguyen Thi Tuc (younger sister-in-law of writer Nguyen Hong) met and became a couple.

Through the Music and Photography Camp of Bac Giang province 2021-2022, musician Do Hong Quan appreciated the provincial leaders’ efforts to facilitate cultural and artistic activities.

Earlier in early September 2022, he had a tour to perform the work “Tieng vong” (The echo) written for the symphony orchestra at the 15th Eurasian Music Festival in Kazan (Russia) - a prestigious international music festival. Immediately after this trip, on September 20, he decided to choose Bac Giang to organize the literary and artistic camp of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations with the participation of 30 writers and artists from 10 provinces in the northern delta, midland and mountainous regions. It is hoped that Bac Giang will always be a destination for writers and artists, helping them create works of high artistic value.
