The event was organised to celebrate the 61st anniversary of Uncle Ho’s visit to Co To Island (May 9, 1961-2022).
The construction of the flagpole was commenced on March 14 by the University of Transport and President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum High Command.

The flagpole has a height of 27.9 m, the same scale as the flagpole at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi. The foundation is designed to help the flagpole withstand storms up to level 12 on Co To Island, which has very strong winds compared to other coastal areas in Vietnam.
