National Games 2018 Day 4: Hanoi flies high with seven more gold medals

The Hanoi team continued to fly high on top of the 2018 National Games standings after claiming seven additional gold medals – five in rowing and two in diving – on November 22, the fourth day of competition.

Hanoi rowers accounted for half of the sport’s gold medal presented on Thursday (November 22), in the men’s double sculls, lightweight single sculls and lightweight quadruple sculls classes, and the women’s double sculls and lightweight double sculls events.

Hanoi dominates the rowing competition on November 22, winning five of the total ten gold medals.

The remaining five rowing titles of the day went to the teams of Da Nang (2), Thai Binh (2) and Ho Chi Minh City (1)

Ngo Phuong Mai secured Hanoi’s first diving gold medal on Thursday after taking top honor in the women’s singles hard board event, before joining Vu Anh Duy to win the mixed doubles 3m soft board category.

Thể Ho Chi Minh City team increased their gold-medal tally at the 2018 National Games to ten after claiming four more titles in basketball and bodybuilding on November 22.

HCM City demonstrated strength as the leading locality in terms of basketball movements by beating the Army team and Cần Thơ tổ blast respective gold medals in both the men’s and women’s basketball 5x5 categories.

Bodybuilders clinched two additional gold medals for HCM City following the overall triumphs of Phạm Thị Phương Thảo and Nguyễn Thị Kim Dung in the women’s 1.6m and 1.65m classes, correspondingly.

The Binh Duong team also won three gold medals on Thursday thanks to the tennis and mountain biking success. Tennis stars Ly Hoang Nam, Trinh Linh Giang and Nguyen Van Phuong made light work their HCM City opponents to sweep the men’s team title, while Da Nang’s females outplayed Kien Giang’s competitors to take the women’s team crown.

Binh Duong bikers dominated the women’s 20km cross-country race, claiming both the team gold medal and the individual title, which went to Dinh Thi Nhu Quynh.

After the fourth day of competition, the Hanoi delegation is leading the provisional standings with 17 gold medals, followed by HCM City with 11 and Binh Duong with six.

Vietnamese sports’ milestones in Asian Games
Vietnam began competing at the Asian Games (Asiad) from the 1982 event in New Delhi, India, with 40 athletes, coaches and officials, competing in three sports including athletics, swimming and shooting. Vietnam aims to win three to five gold medals at the on-going Asiad 2018 in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.
