National Games: Hanoi builds on top spot with more gold medals

December 7 continued to be a successful day of competition for the Hanoi athletes at the ongoing 2018 National Games, as they won additional gold medals to remain on top of the provisional standings with 147 golds, leaving Ho Chi Minh City and the Army team far behind with 109 and 52, respectively.

The remaining three titles went to Tran Thi Kieu Trang (Quang Ninh, women’s Taijijian and Chen-style taijiquan), Phung My Linh (HCM City, women’s gunshu), and Lam Nhat Quynh (Thanh Hoa, women’s nandao).

* The Hanoi delegation claimed an additional gold medal at the 2018 National Games after their fencers beat their Bac Ninh opponents 45-40 to win the men’s team foil event on Friday.

Hai Duong secured their first fencing title this year following their 45-31 triumph over the Hanoi competitors in the women’s team foil final.

In the women’s 69kg class, Nguyen Thi Phuong (Hai Phong) claimed the snatch gold medal.

* The weightlifting competition continued on Dec 7 with the women’s 69kg and 75kg divisions and the men’s 85kg category.

In the women’s 69kg class, Nguyen Thi Phuong (Hai Phong) claimed the snatch gold medal with a lift of 95kg, but lost the clean and jerk title to Le Thi Tham (Nghe An) who lifted 125kg. The clean and jerk success also helped Tham to win the total lift category with 219kg, breaking the previous Games record of 215kg.

Nguyen Thi Van brought home two additional golds for Hanoi in the women’s 75kg category with a clean and jerk lift of 131kg and a total lift of 231kg. Meanwhile, Nguyen Thi Yen (Thai Nguyen) topped the snatch competition with a lift of 101kg.

In the men’s 85kg division, Hoang Tan Tai (HCM City) won the clean and jerk contest with a lift of 178kg, while the remaining gold medals in this weight category went to Dinh Hai Hung (Ninh Binh) with lifts of 153kg (snatch lift) and 330kg (total lift).

Tran Xuan Dung (Thanh Hoa) demonstrated absolute domination in the men’s 94kg category, claiming all three gold medals with lifts of 140kg (snatch), 175kg (clean and jerk) and 315kg (total lift).

* HCM City have crowned the women’s football champions after edging past hosts Hanoi 1-0 to wrap up their 2018 National Games campaign with three wins in a row. Ha Nam finished as the runners-up, while Hanoi settled for a bronze overall.

* The taekwondo competition entered its last day on Dec 7, with Hanoi and Thanh Hoa sharing the remaining two gold medals in the men’s and women’s combat categories.

The Thanh Hoa fighters overcame their HCM City opponents 75-56 in the final match to claim the men’s title, while the women’s crown was secured by the Hanoi team who thrashed the Da Nang contestants with a score of 102-51.

* The last gold medals of the wrestling competition were secured by Hoang Van Nam (Hai Phong) in the men’s 86kg freestyle, Ha Van Hieu (Ninh Binh) in the men’s 125kg freestyle, and Ngo Van Lam (Army team) in the men’s 97kg freestyle category.

* Duong Quoc Hoang and Lim Leng won the fourth title for Ho Chi Minh City’s Billiards & Snooker team in this year’s National Games after beating Nguyen Hoang Phong and Nguyen Van Viet from Da Nang with a score of 9-5 in the men’s doubles Pool 9 Ball event.

* Vietnam’s no. 1 chess player, Le Quang Liem, blasted his second title in the 2018 National Games after finishing triumphantly in the men’s individual rapid category with eight points. Earlier, he added a gold medal to HCM City’s tally in the men’s individual blitz division.

In the women’s individual rapid event, Dang Thi Phuong Thao (Bac Giang) overcame all opponents to seize gold with 8.5 points.

Vietnam’s no. 1 swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien was dominant on the “blue race” at the ongoing 2018 National Games, sweeping three more titles on December 5 to increase her gold-medal tally to 10, following triumphs in the freestyle distances of 50m, 100m, 400m, 800m and 1,500m as well as the 200m medley and 100m backstroke events.
