Old and current Thuong River Bridge
The glorious history
According to some documents, Thuong River Bridge used to be the traffic connection to supply food and weapons to Dien Bien Phu campaign in the period from 1945 to 1954. At the beginning of the resistance war, Phu Lang Thuong Bridge was flipped down the river by Vietnamese army to prevent steps of the enemies to protect the Northeastern and Viet Bac regions.

After the invaders were swept away from the North, the people in Phu Lang Thuong started to heal the war injuries including recovery of the bridge and railway. This was a very important duty paid special attention by President Ho Chi Minh because it was an arterial traffic route from Hanoi capital to Muc Nam Quan.
President Ho Chi Minh visited the construction site recovering Phu Lang Thuong railway on January 24, 1955 (the 1st day of the Lunar New Year of the Goat). This event has great historical meaning to the officials, soldiers and people of Bac Giang as well as experts and workers at the construction site. He came to shake hands with one by one and ask about their health then visited the Bridge.
He asked the participants about the bridge construction progress, praised the achievements gained by the workers, considerately talked to the workers and asked about their Tet celebration and living. He also highly spoke on dedicated support by Chinese experts and people in Phu Lang Thuong town. He sent a letter of commendation to the officials, soldiers and fellowmen on the inauguration ceremony of Hanoi-Muc Nam Quan railway on February 28, 1955.
In 1965 when American Empire started the air and naval wars to destroy northern Vietnam, Thuong River Bridge became one of the focused bombardments for American air force. The anti-aircraft regiment 216 under Ha Bac Air Defense Command (now Air Defense Division 365 under the Air Defense Force) took responsibility for protecting the Bridge. The soldiers of the regimen, local people and the civil self-defense force in the communes bravely fought against the enemies.
In the bombing storms, the mothers and sisters in the “soldiers’ mother association” of Da Mai commune sacrificed to carry noodles and food to the battlefields, sewed thousands of shirts for the soldiers and contributed thousands of workdays to build the anti-aircraft artillery battlefield. The struggle to protect Thuong River Bridge contributed to the glorious victory of the soldiers and people in Ha Bac province.
