Phu Quoc crowned world’s top nature island destination

Updated: 16:12, 26/11/2024

Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island located off the coast of the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang, has been named the world’s leading nature island destination at this year’s World Travel Awards.

The island triumphed over six competitors, including Scotland’s Isle of Skye and Norway’s Lofoten, to claim the title as announced during a ceremony in Portugal on Sunday.

Phu Quoc is renowned for its unspoiled beaches and luxurious resorts, making it a favorite destination for both domestic and international travelers.

In the first 10 months of this year, the island welcomed over 5 million tourists, achieving 78.8% of its annual target. Nearly 800,000 of these visitors were foreigners, surpassing 20% of the yearly goal, according to Kien Giang’s Department of Tourism.

The World Travel Awards, established in 1993, celebrate excellence in the travel and tourism industry and are referred to as the "Oscars of the travel industry."

Winners are determined through votes cast by travel professionals and the public.

In July, Phu Quoc was also voted the world’s second most beautiful island, following the Maldives, by readers of the American magazine Travel+Leisure.
