Press and social networks in cultural development

Updated: 17:24, 10/07/2023
In recent years, press and media agencies across the country have promoted the dissemination of literary and artistic works in many forms, with in-depth cultural and artistic issues. However, besides the positive side, the press still has some limitations such as a lack of in-depth press publications propagandising literature and arts and due attention to the requirements of human construction and cultural development.

Over the past years, despite the strong movements of society and great changes of people's lives and minds, in reality, literary and artistic activities have not achieved the desired results. There have not been outstanding works that directly contribute to honouring good examples or preventing the phenomena of degradation of social morality and rampant corruption.

In recent years, press and media agencies across the country have promoted the dissemination of literary and artistic works in many forms.

The press and publishing play a very important role in the development of society and have a profound impact on each individual as well as the social community. As an essential means of information for social life, the press and publishing have a close relationship with culture as they are parts of culture and a means of transmitting and disseminating culture to the public, including literary and artistic works.

Last weekend, the Department of Communications and Education under the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee held a seminar on “the role of the press and publishing in the promotion of literary and artistic works and building the Ho Chi Minh Cultural Space”.

Many experts said that in addition to the press, social networks are also a form and component of contemporary communications. Social network platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and TikTok even overwhelm the mainstream press in some cases. They attract more users, especially young people, than any newspaper. Therefore, the use of social networks to promote common cultural awareness in the current context is inevitable.

However, social networks have downsides. Good and bad content and images appear mixed up on websites for the purpose of capture views and likes at all costs. However, some "radical views" of electronic newspapers that accidentally or intentionally support the unhealthy trend on social networks are scary.

In essence, it is a head-to-head competition of opinion in the media and ultimately the side getting the most readers wins. This reality requires great attention from the responsible agencies, otherwise, there is a risk of voices opposing distorted views in the mainstream press becoming "too few" and "too lonely".

Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communications announced a statistical result that among five famous TikTokers with the most followers in this city of more than 12 million people, the most famous person attracted 18 million views and over 60.2 million followers within a month. Taking advantage of TikTokers to convey information and promote the positive values of literature and arts, the achieved efficiency will be very great.

To make the society, especially the young generations, love and be more responsible alongside the country, it is crucial to help them learn, love and understand properly the nation’s culture. To do so, the press, publishing, literary and art activities, especially writers and artists, need to devote themselves to the cause of building and developing the Vietnamese culture and people.
