Seminar on preserving, spreading Then singing held in Bac Giang
BAC GIANG- The scientific seminar themed “Preserving and promoting the value of Then heritage of Tay and Nung ethnic people in Bac Giang, Lang Son and Thai Nguyen provinces” took place on October 30 at the Convention Center of Bac Giang province.
The seminar was jointly held by the Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Giang, Lang Son and Thai Nguyen provinces.

The “Practices of Then by Tay, Nung and Thai ethnic groups in Viet Nam” was inscribed in the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2019.
The 3 northern mountainous provinces of Bac Giang, Lang Son and Thai Nguyen and some other localities are home to the Tay and Nung ethnic minority groups.
The scientific seminar was aimed to identify the origin, characteristics, values and current situation of the practices of Then and provide detailed and comprehensive evaluation of preserving and promoting values of Then heritage of Tay and Nung ethnic people in the 3 provinces.
At the seminar, the managers, scientists and researchers from the central agencies and 3 provinces presented many opinions with illustrative photos and clips to highlight special features of Then singing.

This is a religious practice performed professionally with singing and dancing in the rituals praying for bumper crops or treating illness. Together with tính lute and bells, Then singing is very interesting with complex melodies, which are sometimes soft, gentle and slow, sometimes loud and fast.
Besides, the participants recommended some solutions for preserving and promoting the values of Then singing by Tay and Nung ethnic minorities in the 3 provinces in the new period to gain sustainable efficiency.
In the hustle and bustle circle of modern life, it seems that young people are gradually becoming uninterested in traditional artists. Contrary to this popular belief, many groups of young people have been silently working to light up the flame of love for the cultural heritage of their ancestors. Prominent among them is the Xam 48h group, which gathers those who have a common passion for ‘Xam’ — an ancient type of singing by blind buskers.
Bac Giang – For generations, the villages along the Cau River have held festivals to commemorate and pay tribute to Saints Tam Giang (Truong Hong - Truong Hat) on the 12th and 13th of the eighth lunar month. This year, although floods have submerged many historical sites along the river, the local people have found ways to maintain and preserve this traditional cultural beauty.
BAC GIANG - The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (DoCST) on August 22 launched the first traditional costume performance contest of ethnic minorities in Bac Giang province in 2024.
BAC GIANG - Anyone who has attended the traditional festival of ethnic minorities in Son Dong district will surely share the impression of the vibrant and energetic Tac Xinh dance of the San Chay ethnic group (also known as Cao Lan).
Playing the role of connecting and mobilising the community to preserve the traditional cultural identity, ethnic minority artisans in the villages and hamlets around the country have been dedicated to cultural preservation, while enthusiastically leading and teaching traditional performing art values to younger generations, through training courses and mass art movements, contributing to improving the spiritual life of the community.
