Shuttler Vu Thi Trang loses quarterfinal berth to former world No. 1

Updated: 15:27, 26/08/2022
Vietnamese female shuttler Vu Thi Trang missed out on a quarterfinal berth at the 2022 BWF World Championships, after losing to former world No. 1 Tai Tzu-ying in the women’s singles round of 16 on August 25.

Trang showed a resilient fighting spirit against the Chinese Taipei opponent, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the world.

There was a moment during the first set when the Vietnamese shuttler was led 1-10, but she fought hard to narrow down the gap to 11-12.

Vu Thi Trang (R) loses to Chinese Taipei Tai Tzu-ying in the round of 16.

Trang lost the match at 15-21, 10-21 overall, which was an acceptable result for her as Tai Tzu-ying is considered the favourite for this year’s title.

Despite failing to cruise into the quarterfinals, Trang had a memorable tournament in Japan as she made it through to the round of 16 at the BWF World

Championships for the third time, which she had previously done in 2014 and 2019. This is also the best achievement attained by a Vietnamese female shuttler thus far.

Notably, en route to the round of 16, Trang shocked everyone with her second-round victory (21-18, 16-21, 21-18) against No. 15 seed Mia Blichfeldt (Denmark) – Europe’s No. 2 player and 2019 European champion.

Trang was one of the three Vietnamese competitors at the 2022 BWF World Championships. Earlier, her husband, the country’s top male player Nguyen Tien Minh, lost to No. 15 seed Wang Tzu-wei of Chinese Taipei. By participating in this year’s event, Tien Minh made history as the athlete with the most appearances at the BWF World Championships (13 times).

Meanwhile, the remaining Vietnamese representative, Nguyen Thuy Linh, also stopped in the second round of the women’s singles category following her defeat against No. 3 seed An Se-young from the Republic of Korea.
