Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre promotes traditional Vietnamese puppetry in Japan
As part of the 17th Viet Nam Festival in Japan, which is taking place from May 27 to June 3, the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, a prominent cultural institution of Ha Noi, is presenting a special performance programme.
First held in 2008, the Viet Nam Festival in Japan has grown into one of the largest cultural exchange events between Viet Nam and Japan. It serves as a diverse platform for exchange in fields such as culture, economics, tourism, and human resources, contributing to the strengthening of bilateral ties.

As artistic director of the programme, Meritorious Artist Tran Thanh Hien, Director of the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, expressed deep emotion and pride in being invited to represent Viet Nam at this significant cultural event.
She noted that the performance not only fosters artistic exchange but also serves to promote Vietnamese traditional art, particularly water puppetry, to international audiences.
According to Meritorious Artist Tran Thanh Hien, Vietnamese puppetry has become a popular cultural product that appeals to international tourists.
She hopes that this artistic programme will further spread the charm of Vietnamese traditional arts, especially water puppetry, to Japanese spectators, thereby encouraging more Japanese visitors to explore Viet Nam and its capital city of Ha Noi.
The programme blends modern staging with the preservation of Vietnam’s cultural essence, showcasing a refined combination of traditional water puppetry and Vietnamese folk music.
Performing artists include Meritorious Artists Thanh Hien, Duc Hung and Le Thu Huyen, along with Nguyen Dang Nhan, Nguyen Van Phuc, Duong Van Phuong, Pham Duc Duy, Tran Ngoc Linh, and others.
