Vietnam airport wins architecture award for terminal design

Updated: 10:29, 26/05/2025

The T2 international terminal at Phu Bai International Airport in Hue has clinched the gold award in special architecture at the 2024-2025 National Architecture Award, highlighting blend of heritage and modern design.

The ceremony took place at Hanoi Opera House last week, where the T2 terminal was celebrated not only for its architectural uniqueness but also for its contributions to architectural development nationwide.

The T2 terminal of Phu Bai International Airport in Hue, Vietnam.

Spanning an impressive 22,380 square meters, the terminal has the capacity to welcome up to 5 million passengers annually, accommodating as many as 2,500 travelers simultaneously during peak hours.

The construction of the terminal, spearheaded by the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), began in December 2019 and officially opened its doors in June 2023.

Designed by a collaborative team including Kyo Ariyoshi, Nguyen Dang Quang, Hiroyuki Enomoto, Pham Tien Thang and other partners, the terminal combines elements reminiscent of Hue's ancient royal palaces with contemporary architectural innovations.

One of the terminal's most striking features is its expansive roof, which not only highlights its modern aesthetics but also provides essential shelter from Hue's frequent rainfall.

Natural lighting is integrated through a sophisticated wooden heat dissipation system, creating a welcoming, comfortable environment for travelers.

Drawing inspiration from local landmarks such as Ngu Mountain and the Huong River, the terminal serves as a tribute to Hue’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

Designed for scalability and long-term growth, the T2 terminal is equipped to adapt effectively to future increases in passenger volume and the evolving needs of the aviation sector.

The National Architecture Award, organized biennially by the Vietnam Association of Architects in collaboration with the Ministry of Construction and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, aims to foster innovation and honor outstanding architectural contributions across Vietnam.

Alongside the Phu Bai terminal, notable structures such as the Vietnam Military History Museum and Grand Mercure Hotel were also recognized.
