Phu Quoc Airport new terminal design takes inspiration from phoenix

Updated: 10:28, 13/05/2025

A second passenger terminal proposed to be built at Phu Quoc International Airport on Vietnam's popular tourist island is designed to resemble a soaring phoenix.

The existing T1 passenger terminal will remain in use, while T2 will feature a design inspired by the mythical bird, symbolizing Vietnam's aviation industry's strength and international standing.

A design of Phu Quoc Airport after getting an upgrade.

It has been designed by Singaporean consulting firm CPG Airport.

The terminal will serve both international and domestic passengers and meet international standards with a shopping center and an exhibition area.

The apron will include jet bridges to provide a high-class experience for passengers.

Advanced technologies such as online check-ins, automatic baggage sorting and biometric recognition will be integrated to streamline the travel process.

The Ministry of Construction and Kien Giang Province recently announced planning for the airport for 2021-30, with expansion and upgrade works set to begin immediately and be completed in time for the APEC Leaders' Week in 2027.

They will require 1,050 hectares and cost VND26.57 trillion (US$1 billion) by 2030 and another VND25.79 trillion by 2050.

A report by the Airport Design and Construction Consultancy One Member Limited Liability Company said Phu Quoc Airport would have a capacity of 18 million passengers annually by 2027, 4.5 times its current capacity of four million.

The ultimate goal is to increase it to 50 million by 2050.

Also to be built now is a VIP terminal for welcoming heads of state and high-ranking delegations arriving for the APEC meeting.

Designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti, the VIP terminal will draw inspiration from the image of a sea eagle, symbolizing freedom and grace.

A second runway will be added, with both capable of handling wide-body aircraft and long-haul flights.

The aircraft parking area will be expanded to accommodate 70-80 aircraft.

The plan also includes auxiliary facilities such as cargo terminals and radar systems.

Uong Viet Dung, director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, said the plan is not only meant to support APEC 2027 but also to make Phu Quoc a leading regional travel destination and an economic, tourism and international conference hub.
