Minister calls for Bac Giang's stronger efforts to boost lychee production and exports

Updated: 15:47, 12/05/2025

BAC GIANG - Minister of Agriculture and Environment Do Duc Duy on May 11 led a working delegation to Bac Giang province to discuss lychee production and export readiness ahead of the 2025 harvest season.

Despite its modest contribution to the province’s economy, agriculture has long been regarded as a key pillar in Bac Giang’s development strategy, with clearly defined production zones.

The Chairman of Bac Giang provincial People's Committee Nguyen Viet Oanh speaks at the meeting.

The sector has evolved comprehensively toward modernization, focusing on high-tech, organic and clean farming practices adapted to each locality's strengths.

Among the province’s standout products is lychee, cultivated on approximately 29,700 hectares. The fruit is currently in its development stage, with the early harvest expected from May 20 to June 15, and the main crop from June 10 to July 20.

Minister Do Duc Duy concludes the event.

Speaking at the meeting, Nguyen Viet Oanh, Chairman of the Bac Giang People’s Committee, said promising signs from this year’s lychee crop offer strong prospects for agricultural growth.

He called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment for continued support, including soil assessments and scientific application to extend harvest periods, improve processing and enhance product quality.

Speaking with provincial leaders and businesses, the Minister praised Bac Giang’s progress in building a modern, high-tech agriculture sector.

Bac Giang has prioritized product quality and is planning trade promotion campaigns both domestically and overseas, including in Ho Chi Minh City, the southern provinces, Europe, and the China-ASEAN trade fair.

These efforts are intended to strengthen market links and showcase Bac Giang's specialty agricultural products.

The province continues to guide farmers in proper care and harvest timing, ensuring standards are met for domestic and export markets. Scientific advancements are being applied to reduce costs and improve product quality.

Strict supervision of cultivation areas and packing facilities is in place to comply with import regulations.

Local leaders asked the ministry to help forecast pests and diseases and to address technical issues in lychee production and export.

They also requested the expansion of irradiation facilities to meet U.S. requirements or the construction of a new facility in northern Vietnam.

Minister Duy emphasized the importance of developing lychee varieties suited to warmer climates and expanding early-ripening types to spread out the harvest.

He noted positive signals from this year’s crop and reaffirmed agriculture’s strategic role in the province’s economy.

Bac Giang committed to continuing support for cooperatives, scaling up concentrated farming zones and investing in post-harvest processing to increase added value.

In his conclusion, the Minister acknowledged Bac Giang’s efforts in developing specialized lychee farming. He said the fruit has become a national product with growing exports to premium markets.

To ensure a successful season, he urged authorities to monitor weather and pests, enforce traceability and food safety standards, and improve logistics through expanded cold storage and green transport routes.

He also encouraged enterprises to take the initiative in procurement, processing, and export planning, while collaborating with the ministry on quarantine and regulatory procedures. The ministry will continue to update market trends and support stakeholders in real time.

“Strengthening green, clean lychee production and building a compelling brand story will elevate Bac Giang’s global position,” Duy said.

Earlier, the delegation visited lychee farms in Phuc Hoa commune of Tan Yen district and a processing facility operated by Vifoco Import-Export JSC in Bac Giang city.
