Diversifying sales channels to boost lychee market reach

Updated: 11:50, 11/05/2025

BAC GIANG - While lychees are still in the early fruiting stage, Bac Giang has proactively launched trade promotion efforts. Numerous agreements on purchasing, distribution and logistics have been signed, opening new avenues for this year's harvest.

Strengthening market links

Recent rains have alleviated drought conditions in lychee-growing areas. In Muoi hamlet, Giap Son commune (Luc Ngan), farmers are thinning early fruit clusters to improve fruit quality and ease harvesting.

Domestic businesses, cooperatives, lychee growers, retail groups, shopping malls and supermarket chains sign a cooperation agreement to consume products in 2025.

Ly Thi Ha, a local grower with 400 trees, said: “After weeks of drought, the rains came just in time. In good seasons, we’ve earned over 200 million VND (over 8,600 USD), and I hope this year will be similar or better”.

According to Vi Van Ngu, Deputy Chairman of Giap Son commune, the commune cultivates nearly 1,000 hectares of lychee, all under VietGAP or GlobalGAP standards. Ten growing area codes are certified for export to China, Japan and the US. Packing facilities have already surveyed orchards and plan to buy about 4,000 tonnes this season.

Nguyen Thi Tra from Binh Nguyen Clean Agricultural Cooperative said their seven-member group expects to supply 200 tonnes. They will also buy additional lychees to supply southern provinces and China. The cooperative has secured logistics partnerships for the 2025 season. In Phuc Hoa commune of Tan Yen district, some companies have signed early contracts at stable prices.

Tran Trong Nguyen, Chairman of Mova Plus, said the company aims to export 500 tonnes of U Hong lychees (early ripening lychees) to Europe this year, targeting over 2,000 tonnes by 2030.

The firm has signed five-year supply agreements with growers in Phuc Hoa and Tan Moc and assigned staff to support cultivation under GlobalGAP standards. Other companies have signed preferential shipping rate deals.

Nguyen Van Chien, Director of Viettel Post in Bac Giang, said the company will handle lychee delivery from 22 local branches, ensuring freshness and offering discounted shipping rates.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, many local and international firms—including those from China, the US, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia—have expressed interest in Bac Giang’s lychee.

At a recent trade conference, producers, cooperatives, and logistics firms signed agreements for the 2025 season. These links help stabilize prices and avoid oversupply issues, while opening up new markets and enhancing brand value.

The province has 29,700 hectares of lychee this year. Over 90% of trees have flowered and over 80% are expected to bear fruit. VietGAP covers 16,000 hectares, GlobalGAP 204 hectares, and organic production 10 hectares. Early harvest is set from May 20 to June 15; the main season runs June 10 to July 30, 2025.

Maintaining quality, supporting distribution

Despite adverse weather, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has guided farmers through the challenges. Officials have inspected 240 growing area codes for export (totaling 17,400 hectares) and 39 packing facilities. Coordination with Japan-authorized inspectors confirmed that Global Export-Import JSC met Japan’s standards. Vifoco JSC has submitted documents for US market certification and is awaiting approval from APHIS.

Domestically, lychees are connected to retail chains including Central Retail (GO!, Big C, Tops Market), MM Mega Market, Co.opmart, WinMart, and wholesale/traditional markets in cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, and VND Nai.

Export markets remain a top priority. Fresh and processed lychees are exported to traditional markets like China, and newer ones such as the US, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Bac Giang is expanding into the Middle East, Thailand, and Canada together with promoting online sales through domestic and international e-commerce platforms, social media (TikTok, Facebook, Zalo, YouTube) and fanpages.

Duong Ngoc Chien, Director of the provincial Department of Industry and Trade, said the 2025 lychee promotion conference emphasized Bac Giang’s commitment to producing high-quality, safe, and uniquely flavored lychees.

The province pledges full support for growers and traders in harvesting, processing, and logistics, including access to credit, electricity, storage, and public services.

“We look forward to welcoming more businesses to Bac Giang to explore opportunities and help bring lychees to markets worldwide,” Chien said.
