Bac Giang preserves heritage, develops tourism

Updated: 17:22, 10/05/2025

BAC GIANG – As a province rich in cultural heritage, Bac Giang has recently made considerable efforts to leverage its historical and cultural assets to promote tourism. However, to fully unlock the potential of these heritages and boost tourism, a comprehensive set of measures must be implemented.

According to official statistics, the province is home to over 2,000 historical and cultural relic sites, including 116 national ones.

Notably, Bac Giang boasts five UNESCO-recognised cultural heritages: Quan ho folk singing, Ca tru (ceremonial) singing, the worship of the Mother Goddesses of the Three Realms, the Then practice of the Tay, Nung, and Thai ethnic groups, and the woodblocks of Buddhist Sutra in Vinh Nghiem Pagoda.

Additionally, it has 20 nationally recognised intangible cultural heritages and hosts nearly 800 festivals annually. These are invaluable assets for tourism development.

Resolution No. 112, issued on June 15, 2021 by the provincial Party Committee on tourism development for the 2021–2025 period with a vision to 2030, outlines four key tourism products, including cultural-spiritual tourism; eco-tourism; entertainment and sports tourism; and community-based tourism linked with fruit-growing regions, agricultural products, and rural areas. High-quality service development is also a major focus.

To implement this strategy, districts, township, and city across the province have adopted their own resolutions and detailed tourism development plans.

Coordination among sectors and localities has been strengthened, identifying tourism as a key driver of socio-economic growth.

Many tourist site have become attractive to visitors, including the Tay Yen Tu Spiritual and Ecotourism Complex (Son Dong district) and Suoi Mo Ecotourism Area (Luc Nam district); special national relic sites such as Vinh Nghiem Pagoda and the Xuong Giang Victory Site (Bac Giang city), and Bo Da Pagoda (Viet Yen township); and the community-based tourism site in Ven village (Yen The district).

According to Do Tuan Khoa, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the province has basically established and begun effectively operating four key tourism spaces: the Hanoi–Bac Giang–Luc Ngan–Son Dong route; the Tay Yen Tu tourism space linked to the 'Dharma dissemination path of the founders of the Truc Lam Yen Tu Buddhist Zen sect'; community-based tourism tied to fruit-growing areas; and ecotourism and leisure spaces associated with golf tourism.

Since 2021, nine new tourist sites have been recognised, bringing the total number of certified tourism sites in the province to 20. From 2021 to 2025, Bac Giang is projected to welcome over 9.2 million visitors.

In 2024 alone, the province received 2.6 million tourists, a 27% increase compared to 2023. In 2025, visitor numbers are expected to reach 3 million, fulfilling the target set by Resolution No. 112.

Tourism revenue reached over 7.2 trillion VND (277.15 million USD) in 2024 and is estimated at 3 trillion VND this year. The sector is creating jobs for approximately 3,000 workers.

Associate Professor Dr. Bui Thanh Thuy from Hanoi University of Culture, a long-time tourism education expert, commented that Bac Giang has impressive heritage resources with strong potential to become a prominent destination in northern Vietnam.

The province is on the right path by developing tourism rooted in its local cultural and natural assets.

Looking ahead, the planned merger of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang to form a new province is expected to open up new opportunities for the tourism sector.

With a richer and more diverse portfolio of tourism products, as well as strong leadership, supportive policies, and the involvement of businesses and local communities, local tourism could thrive, making the locality a bright spot on the northern tourism map and contributing significantly to regional and national socio-economic development.
