Hanoi shivers as rare cold snap chills northern Vietnam in summer

Updated: 16:52, 27/05/2025

Hanoi residents woke up to an unexpected chill on Sunday as temperatures dipped to 20 degrees, unusual for late May, but not unprecedented, according to weather experts.

The drop is part of a larger weather pattern affecting northern Vietnam, where a cold air mass combined with high-altitude winds has brought heavy rain and unseasonably cool temperatures. Lowland areas across the north recorded temperatures between 20–22 degrees, while mountainous Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province saw the mercury fall to 14 degrees.

In the capital, a weather station in Ha Dong District logged a low of 20.6 degrees. Meteorologists noted that similar cold snaps have occurred before, with Hanoi once hitting 14 degrees in May.

The cold front has unleashed torrential downpours in northern and north-central provinces, particularly in Ha Tinh. On Saturday alone, 55 of 103 weather stations in the province reported rainfall above 100 mm, with some locations exceeding 600 mm, breaking historical records for May.

The rains have taken a toll on agriculture. Over 2,000 tons of harvested rice and 2,200 hectares of paddies were damaged, while floods swept away nearly 12,000 heads of poultry and cattle.

Rain is expected to continue in northern Vietnam through Tuesday, especially during early morning and evening hours, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. Conditions should gradually improve after Friday as the cold air weakens and high-altitude winds subside.

Forecasts from U.S. weather service AccuWeather show Hanoi's temperatures ranging from 24–32 degrees this week, while Sa Pa is expected to remain cooler at 17–21 degrees.

In central Vietnam, rain is expected from Nghe An to Quang Binh on Monday, and from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh between Tuesday and Thursday. Drier, hotter conditions will likely return starting Friday, beginning in the western regions and spreading outward.

Southern Vietnam and the Central Highlands will experience a brief lull in rain on Monday and Tuesday, with wetter weather returning by Wednesday.
