Vietnam's 80th National Day celebrations to feature military parade, troop review

Updated: 11:34, 14/05/2025

The Ministry of National Defense and Ministry of Public Security will organize a military parade and a troop review in Hanoi during the 80th National Day celebrations on Sept. 2.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Nghia, deputy chief of general staff of the Vietnam People's Army, said Monday that units that participated in the parade to mark the 50th anniversary of reunification, April 30, in Ho Chi Minh City would take part again.

Soliders march on Le Loi Street in HCMC's District 1 as crowds watch and cheer as part of a miltary parade to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vietnam's reunification on April 30, 2025.

The formations for the upcoming event will include 11 stationary and 27 marching units.

Nghia instructed the Ministry of Public Security's General Department of Defense Industry to arrange supplies, technical equipment and transportation for the parade.

The Hanoi Capital Command has been tasked with identifying the parade route.

Since rehearsals will be held during the hottest time of the year in Hanoi, participating units have been told to develop flexible schedules to ensure the well-being of the troops.

The "August Revolution," which National Day commemorates, refers to the uprising against French colonial rule and Japanese troops in August 1945 that led to the proclamation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on Sept. 2, 1945.

It was marked by President Ho Chi Minh's Declaration of Independence at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi.

Historically, Vietnam has held three major troop reviews: in 1955 at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi after the victory against the French at Dien Bien Phu, on May 15, 1975, in Saigon to celebrate national reunification and in 1985 to mark the 40th National Day.

Recently a military parade was held in HCMC to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification.

It involved over 13,000 troops from parade and marching units and 6,000 guests were in attendance.

Hundreds of thousands of citizens lined the streets in the city's downtown areas to watch the spectacle.
