Vietnam's No. 1 chess player defeats reigning World Cup champion
Early this morning (April 27), Liem earned a dramatic win over the Polish grandmaster after 6 games thanks to his strength in the blitz tie-breaks, the content for which Liem won the world championship in 2013.

Before entering the match in the 5th round of the Oslo Esports Cup 2022, which took place from the night of April 26 to the morning of April 27 (Vietnam time), the last time Liem met Duda was at the Charity Cup in March.
A month ago, Liem beat Duda in the qualifying round of the Charity Cup, but, he lost 1.5-2.5 to the Polish player in the semi-finals (with 1 loss and 3 draws out of 4 rapid games).
Both players were focused on their reunion this morning as they understand each other's gameplay quite well.
In game 1, Liem played white to attack strongly with the danger of the column C Pawn. Duda lost his queen on the 24th move and succumbed on the 36th move.
In game 2, Liem held the black but played proactively and established an advantage over Duda.
However, the 15th-ranked player in the world also showed his class in important moments with sharp counterattacks. On the 68th move, Duda rode the E6 Rook to open the path and defeated Liem.
In game 3, Liem launched an overwhelming attack, but with reasonable changes, Duda successfully claimed a draw after 68 moves.
In game 4, the two players continued with another draw after 56 moves. Drawing 2-2 after 4 rapid games, Liem and Duda had to enter a blitz tie-break to determine the winner.
As the content in which Liem once won the world championship in 2013, he proved his best qualities to win 2-0in the two blitz matches.
Ruining Duda’s birthday party, Liem claimed 2 more points to climb to 4th place in the rankings with the 8 points, level with Duda (3rd) and Jorden van Foreest (5th), having unexpectedly defeated "Chess King" Magnus Carlsen 2.5-1.5 in Round 5.
Earlier, Liem took just three games to beat Eric Hansen 2.5-0.5 in the fourth round on the evening of April 25. After five matches, the Ho Chi Minh City born player claimed victory against Chess King Carlsen, Hansen and Duda but lost to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa.
The defeat of Carlsen in Round 5 allowed Indian chess prodigy Praggnanandhaa to return to the top of the table with 12 points after a convincing 2.5-0.5 victory over Hansen.
Round 6 will take place from tonight to the morning of April 28 (Vietnam time), with Liem set to face Anish Giri (Netherlands, 8th in the world). This will be a big challenge for Liem in the championship race.
