Vinh Long ships first batch of sweet potato to China

The southern province of Vinh Long has exported its first batch of sweet potato to China via the official channel.

The 28-tonne shipment was announced at a ceremony jointly held by Vinh Long and the Department of Plant Protection on April 19 in Binh Tan District.

To date China has approved 27 cultivation areas and three packaging facilities in Vinh Long for exporting sweet potato to the world’s second largest economy.

According to Vinh Long Vice Chairman Nguyen Van Liet, Binh Tan District is the largest sweet potato growing region in the Mekong Delta, with a total area of 10,000 hectares and annual output of 300,000 tonnes.

Local farmers have adopted new cultivation methods to ensure their products meet food safety standards, while reducing costs and increasing incomes.

In the future, Vinh Long will work with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to establish more sweet potato cultivation areas and packaging facilities that are eligible for export, said Liet.
