Vinh Nghiem and Bo Da pagodas nominated as world heritage

BAC GIANG- There are 6 special national relic sites and 32 relics belonging to 3 northern provinces of Bac Giang, Quang Ninh and Hai Duong nominated in the dossier seeking recognition for the Complex of Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son, Kiep Bac Monuments and Landscapes as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Of which, 2 relic sites of Bac Giang province including Vinh Nghiem pagoda (Yen Dung district) and Bo Da pagoda (Viet Yen township) are in the list.

Vinh Nghiem pagoda is a place of worship for Buddhist and three founders of Truc Lam Zen Sect namely Tran Nhan Tong, Phap Loa and Huyen Quang, where used to be a training center for Buddhist monks.

It served as a training institution for monks during the Tran Dynasty and a cradle of Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen Sect, playing an especially important role in the Buddhism history of Tran dynasty and Vietnamese Buddhism.

This pagoda is also home to the collection of more than 3,000 Buddhism woodblocks dating back from the 16th to 19th centuries.

Bo Da pagoda covers an area of 27.5 hectares built in Ly and Tran dynasties. It has a unique architecture with 5 main relics including Tu An pagoda, Tam Duc temple, Cao (high) pagoda, tower garden and Ao Mieu (shrine pond).

The pagoda is preserving 1,935 woodblocks of Buddhism sutra inscribed in Chinese-Sino characters dating back Le dynasty with more than 40 wooden statues from Le Trung Hung and Nguyen dynasties.

The UNESCO experts are appraising the nomination dossier and they will carry out a survey this August to evaluate historical and cultural values, planning and signatures of the relics. The nomination is expected to be approved by UNESCO expert council in 2025.
