Complex of Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son, Kiep Bac Monuments and Landscapes seeks UNESCO title
The complex covers the three provinces, with Con Son - Kiep Bac of Hai Duong being an indispensable link in the network of Truc Lam Zen Buddhism relic system, which still preserves layers of sediment of Vietnamese culture. This also served as a bridge connecting the Thang Long Imperial City with the Holy Land of Truc Lam Zen Buddhism. Since then, the Truc Lam Zen sect has developed widely across the country.
The Con Son - Kiep Bac special national relic owns special cultural and historical values and is on its way to becoming a world cultural heritage. |
10 years ago, on December 20, 2013, the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam assigned the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to guide and coordinate with the People's Committees of Quang Ninh and Bac Giang provinces to compile a profile on the complex and submit it to the Prime Minister for approving its submission to UNESCO for recognition as a world heritage.
On January 30, 2021, the Deputy PM entrusted the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to partner with the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO to send a summary report on the nomination of the complex to the UNESCO World Heritage Center for including it in the proposed list of sites for profile making.
Since then, the People's Committees of the three provinces have organized hundreds of meetings with ministries, central agencies, and international organizations to collect opinions for profile preparation. After many changes, the profile now features the official name of "Complex of Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son, Kiep Bac Monuments and Landscapes".
At a working session with the Standing Board of the Hai Duong provincial Party Committee in March 2023, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that Hai Duong is a sacred land of outstanding people, associated with the names and careers of many national hero and celebrities.
He asked the province to urgently coordinate with relevant ministries and localities to complete the nomination profile to seek recognition of the " Complex of Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son, Kiep Bac Monuments and Landscapes" as a world heritage, forming a heritage chain and best promoting the heritage value.
After the profile is submitted to UNESCO, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) - an independent consulting organization - will send experts to evaluate the site and then give recommendations and some amendments if necessary.
It is a very long way to make the complex a world heritage site, but sending the profile to UNESCO is a very important step forward of the three provinces. This is a successful step in the journey of turning it into a heritage of humanity. It is even more meaningful when taking place right at the time when the Con Son - Kiep Bac Autumn Festival - a national intangible cultural heritage is held.
As scheduled, the official profile will be submitted to UNESCO in Paris before December 31 this year.
