“Rice and flower villages” programme flourishes
Enhancing values of cultivated land
We visited the flower growing areas in the province this July. Although it is in mid-summer, the fields of peach trees and lilies in the communes of Dinh Tri, Dinh Ke (Bac Giang city), Thai Dao (Lang Giang district) and Bao Dai (Luc Nam district) are in full blossom. These types of flower are thought to be grown only in autumn and winter-spring seasons, now local people can do intensive farming in all four seasons thanks to technical application.

According to Nguyen Thi Sao in Chang village, Bao Dai commune, before she had only cultivated rice, onion and some other types of vegetable but they brought low economic values. Some years ago, she changed to grow flowers like lilies, daisy and ornamental plants such as poinsettias and rhododendron.
Particularly, she cultivates 4 crops of lilies each year in an area of 15,000 square metre earning profit about 1.5 billion VND (64,700 USD) after deducting all expenses. She established Hoa Vuong Cooperative of fresh flowers and bonsai (including 9 members) in September 2019 creating linkage to expand production, supply seedlings, purchase and consume flowers of local people. Currently, the Cooperative rents more land to build net houses and refrigerated warehouse for flower preservation and serving production.
The communes of Dinh Tri, Thai Dao and Nghia Trung were chosen key areas for implementing the programme “rice villages, flower villages”. From some small cultivation models some years ago, the flower growing area in the province has reached 480 hectares mainly in some districts of Lang Giang, Viet Yen, Luc Nam and Bac Giang city.
If 1 hectare of rice growing only yielded some tens of million VND per year before, now farmers can earn some hundred millions even billions of VND per hectare from growing flowers creating jobs for thousands of labourers. Many flower and seedling purchasing and preservation areas have been established in Thai Dao and Dinh Ke communes.
For expansion of the movement
Vietnam’s economy has seen remarkable development in recent years with higher per capita income. The people’s quality of life has been improved. Thus, flowers have been chosen key cultivated plants by many localities in the province.

Particularly, Bac Giang city has invested in technical infrastructure construction of the flower and safe farm produce cultivation areas in Dinh Tri commune covering an area of 26 hectares worth more than 18 billion VND (776,542 USD) in 2018-2020 period.
Currently, some enterprises, cooperatives and households are researching to invest in high-tech flower production in this area. Besides, Nghia Ha Flower Club was invested 1.5 billion VND (64,700 USD) by Viet Yen district to build infrastructure in flower cultivation area.
According to Duong Thanh Tung, Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, “rice villages, flower villages” programme was implemented in the right time when the agricultural sector provided policies on plant restructuring. After 2 times of reviewing and drawing implementation experience, the programme has gained enormous results contributing to heightening farmers’ income.
In coming time, the department will support agricultural encouragement and science and technology transfer in cultivating types of flowers.
“Flower brings high income but it is not a popular plant because it requires techniques, cultivation experience and consumption market”, said Tung.
Thus, in order to expand the model, the localities must make production area planning, invite scientists to provide training in technology transfer and cultivation procedures for farmers while shaking hands with enterprises in production and consumption.
Besides, the localities need to have special mechanism to support development of flower intensive cultivation areas to meet market demands. In addition, it is necessary to establish trademarks and boost promotion to bring make the products become more popular.
