Actively providing home treatment support for Covid-19 patients

Updated: 18:47, 12/01/2022
(BGO) - When the coverage of two vaccine doses for people aged 15 years and over in the province reaches over 97 percent and the injection of the third dose is being accelerated, from January 2022, Bac Giang will shift to treating asymptomatic Covid-19 patients at home in order to ease the load at medical facilities.

Nine districts and city simultaneously deploy the drive

As of January 11, the province had 236 infections (F0s) in nine districts and city (except Luc Nam district) receiving treatment at their residences, accounting for 18.2 percent of the total number of Covid-19 patients in the province. Medical staff in Tran Nguyen Han ward (Bac Giang city) provide medicines for the family of a Covid-19 patient.

Bac Giang city currently has the largest number of Covid-19 patients treated at home with 159 cases. The city Health Center has established 16 mobile medical stations, each with 6-8 staff members who coordinate with personnel of communal and ward health stations to manage and treat 8-10 patients.

T.V.H from Tran Nguyen Han ward said: “My family has three infected people, but they all show mild symptoms, so they are treated at home. At first, I was also worried, but with enthusiastic guidance from medical staff, their health is progressing well. At home, all living conditions are favorable, everyone tries to eat and drink and follow the treatment regimen. Now, my eldest child has recovered from the disease."

According to the Department of Health, the patients’ health is stable, and they have strictly followed the instructions of medical staff to keep themselves and their relatives safe.

To closely monitor patients’ health, mobile medical stations created Zalo groups. Twice a day, patients post their health status on the groups. When there is an abnormal development, they call the medical staff directly.

Ninh Son commune (Viet Yen district) currently has eight cases under home treatment. They are asymptomatic and their families have separate rooms, toilets, and medical waste storage area, so the working group advised the communal steering committee for Covid-19 prevention and control to apply treatment at the residences. Patients and relatives must also commit to strictly complying with epidemic prevention and control regulations.

Supervising and providing active support

The provincial Young Doctors Association has arranged 120 doctors and nurses from hospitals and health centers to form a consultant group to treat F0s at home through software that connects patients and medical staff. Every day, patients self-declare their health status on the software. When there are abnormal signs, they will directly call the switchboard number (1900 0232) for help.

Doctor Ha Thanh Van from the Emergency Department of the provincial General Hospital - a member of the group, said that after its establishment, the group received a number of phone calls from residents, mainly about how to know the signs and symptoms of the disease.

The health worker in Son Dong district instruct to treat Covid-19 patient at home.

“We teach patients how to self-monitor their breathing and equip themselves with an automatic blood oxygen meter (SP02) to promptly detect breathing difficulties or lung damage,” he said.

Community Covid-19 teams in communes, wards and townships also actively support the monitoring of home-treated cases. For disadvantaged households, in addition to providing medicines, patients are also provided with food and foodstuff by local socio-political organizations.

Tu Quoc Hieu, Director of the Health Department, said that after nearly two weeks of implementation, the model of F0 management and treatment at home has initially proven effective. The whole province has recorded 19 recoveries, finishing the treatment process at home. During the home treatment, five severe cases have been promptly transferred to higher-level hospitals.

In order to actively respond to bad developments during treatment, doctors recommend that patients focus on monitoring their health, promptly contact doctors who provide direct treatment or call the consultation center of the Association.
