Bac Giang attracts investment to form farm produce wholesale markets
BAC GIANG - Bac Giang province currently has more than 130 markets of all kinds. While most markets are facing many difficulties because traders have to compete with online sellers, supermarkets and convenience stores, many markets and trading points under the model of "wholesale market" for agricultural products are operating quite effectively.
More than ten years ago, at Dinh Neo intersection in Chung village, Lien Son commune, Tan Yen district, some families purchased chickens from Yen The and Tan Yen districts and then wholesale to traders from other places.

Initially, households only bought and sold chickens during the day. Thanks to the abundant and quality supply, and convenient location, after a short time, this place formed a bustling business venue, especially at night with all kinds of poultry and waterfowl. Since then, people have called this area "Dinh Neo intersection poultry market".
When it was established, this area had only a few households around the intersection between National Highway 17 and Provincial Road 298 engaging in the purchase and sale of poultry. Now, there are about 300 households. The agents and shops stretch from Dinh Neo intersection to near Cao Xa intersection, adjacent to Cao Thuong town, Tan Yen district.
Giap Van Manh in Chung village, Lien Son commune, said that his family has opened a chicken wholesale agent at Dinh Neo intersection for nine years. On average, he sells 1 tonne of chicken per day.
According to Manh, every night, more than 50 trucks and dozens of motorbikes come here to deliver and buy about 250 tonnes of poultry and waterfowl to bring to other provinces and cities such as Bac Ninh, Hanoi, Hai Duong, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh for consumption.
The total value of the goods is estimated at tens of billions of VND. From a small trading point, Dinh Neo intersection has become a famous food wholesale area, generating income for hundreds of business households.
Although it is not yet recognized as a wholesale market, over the past ten years, Mia market in Tan My commune, Bac Giang city has become the largest fruit purchasing and supplying point in the province.
Every night, vehicles transporting fruits from all over the province, other localities nationwide and from China and Thailand to Mia market to sell hundreds of tonnes of tubers and fruits. In particular, on the first and 15th days of the lunar months, the volume of fruits increases 3-4 times compared to normal days.
Currently, some markets like Nenh market and Ninh Son market (Viet Yen township); the vegetable and fruit wholesale point on Dam Than Huy street (Bac Giang city) are also operating under the model of night-time farm produce wholesale market. These business locations attract thousands of people and small traders to sell and purchase agricultural products, and are evaluated by local authorities as operating effectively, contributing to the sale of farmers’ agricultural products and trade promotion.

The whole province currently has 132 markets but none of them have been recognized as a wholesale market. While many markets such as the agricultural products market in Chu town, Luc Ngan district; and Cam Dan market in Huu San, Son Dong district operate ineffectively as they cannot compete with e-commerce platforms, convenience stores and supermarkets, Mia market, Nenh market and the poultry trading point at Dinh Neo intersection have become bright spots in commercial activities.
In order to strengthen management to ensure that markets and business locations are in order, and avoid tax losses, Bac Giang city has planned to build an agricultural wholesale market in Dinh Tri commune and move Mia market to a new, larger location.
Tan Yen district also plans a poultry wholesale market in Chung village; while Viet Yen township will move the night vegetable and fruit wholesale point from Nenh market to Ninh Son market. Currently, localities are actively attracting investment and in the near future, Bac Giang province will form many large agricultural wholesale markets, meeting the goods production and selling needs of the people.
