Bac Giang farmers earn high income from flower of local ginseng

(BGO) – The flowers of Sam Nam Nui Danh (Danh Mountain’s radix codonopsis javanicae or Dang Shen) are now blooming in Viet Lap and Lien Chung communes of Tan Yen district (Bac Giang province), brining happiness and high income for local farmers.

In late 2021, Nguyen Thi Nhung in Nguon village, Lien Chung commune invested over 500 million VND (20,900 USD) to grow more than one hectare of Dang Shen. After nearly one year, it is now flowering. The small crops give her over 400 kg of fresh flower or 50 kg of dried product. With average selling price of one million VND per kg of dried one, her family can earn 50 million VND.

Tan Yen district grows about 35 hectares of Sam Nam Nui Danh, 27 of which can be harvested flower and five hectares start to give root.

Director of Lien Chung Sam Nam Nui Danh Production and Consumption Cooperative Nguyen Thi Kim Dung said the small seedling will flower after nearly one year which can be harvested from late August till middle of October. 4 year old crop will give about 40 kg of dried flower per sao (old measuring unit equal to 360 square meters). The farmer can earn hundred of million VND per hectare per year by selling the flower.

The testing result proved that the saponin content in Dang Shen’s flower bud is even higher than that of the root. So it becomes specialty under various processing products such as Dang Shen’s flower bud tea which is among 4 star products in Bac Giang province in 2022 under the One Commune One Product Programme.

Besides, this flower can be eaten directly or cooked with other ingredient to add numerous nutrition for the body.
