Bac Giang innovates metrology to increase competitiveness for businesses
BAC GIANG – The provincial Department of Science and Technology has recommended many solutions to innovate metrology, thus promoting production development and improving competitiveness for local businesses.
The solutions aimed to materialise the Prime Minister’s Decision No. 996/QD-TTg dated August 10, 2018, approving the project "Strengthening and innovating metrology to support Vietnamese enterprises in improving competitiveness and international integration by 2025, with orientation to 2030".

Determining the importance of ensuring metrology for businesses, on August 30, 2021, the People's Committee of Bac Giang province issued Plan No. 409/KH-UBND (Plan No. 409) to effectively implement the contents of the project.
With its assigned functions and tasks, the Department of Science and Technology has issued a plan to realize Plan No. 409. After nearly three years, many contents and goals stated in the plan have been effectively implemented by the department and directly its Sub-department of Standards, Metrology and Quality. Notably, the sub-department has helped businesses ensure the quality of products and goods through inspection, calibration, testing of metrology instruments and measurement standards.
Since 2021, five businesses have been selected to participate in the metrology assurance support programme, of which, three apply the laboratory management system and one uses the ISO 9001 system. Hundreds of business officials have been trained on metrology methods; and guided to use quantitative scales and performing gasoline and oil measurements and ensure measurement of the quantity of pre-packaged goods...
In 2023 alone, the Department of Science and Technology selected two qualified enterprises to participate in the metrology assurance programme. They are FEC Group Joint Stock Company in Bac Giang city and Adenco Medicinal Mushrooms Company Limited in Lang Giang district.
Specialised agencies have supported businesses in analysing measurement activities at the stages of service provision, production, and measurement verification; determining technical norms and losses; and organising training classes for calibration and testing teams.
Promoting popularisation, support
In the coming time, authorities will continue to direct and promote dissemination of metrology for businesses, especially those in priority industries and fields such as electricity production and trading; gasoline exploitation, processing and supply; production and trading of iron, steel and non-ferrous metals. Communication activities will be integrated into the Vietnam Science and Technology Day event (May 18); World Metrology Day (May 20); conferences and seminars.

Recently, the Sub-department of Standards, Metrology and Quality organised a course on metrology knowledge for more than 400 staff members in charge of science and technology activities, leaders of commune-level People's Committees and civil servants in charge of agriculture, forestry, industry and trade, finance and accounting in localities.
This year, the sub-department will survey 25 businesses in the province to evaluate and select three units eligible to participate in the metrology assurance programme; coordinate with and advise businesses to develop programmes following the guidance of the Ministry of Science and Technology. It will take prime responsibility for inspecting quality measurement standards for local petroleum businesses.
According to Trieu Ngoc Trung, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, the department will continue to send staff to participate in training courses organised by central agencies to foster skills and qualifications. It will act as a bridge to transfer information and knowledge in the field of metrology in the province. In addition, it will propose higher-level agencies review and complete policies and mechanisms to facilitate the application of metrology assurance programmes in enterprises.
