Bac Giang Oncology Hospital puts into use modern accelerated radiotherapy system
The system, funded by the Ministry of Health, includes modern and synchronous equipment for safe and effective radiotherapy, such as GE Discovery STE 16 PET/CT Scanner, computer system and Monaco planning software, and Elekta Synergy Platform linear accelerator. The hospital is making full use of the equipment to perform advanced techniques like 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to best serve patients and ease the load at higher-level hospitals.

According to Specialist Doctor I Nguyen Ngoc Toan, head of the hospital’s Radiation Department, the core principle of all radiotherapy techniques is to use high doses of radiation to shrink tumors and low doses for healthy organs. From which, detailed procedures are designed for each technique, but basically, it goes through four steps: simulation, treatment planning, checking before radiotherapy and conducting radiotherapy.

In order to effectively use the above-mentioned system, the staff at the Radiation Department have been trained in a methodical manner by the producer’s experts and those working at higher-level hospitals. In addition, the Bac Giang Oncology Hospital has continuously organized intensive training courses for doctors, nurses and technicians thus helping them firmly grasp the principles to ensure the quality of treatment for patients.

According to Dr. Toan, radiotherapy is also called external-beam radiation therapy that uses Electron and Photon rays to destroy tumors. Therefore, after finishing the treatment session, there will be no residual radiation on the body, and the patient can contact with friends and relatives.
