The provincial Department of Transport has just given feedback on the draft master plan on the development of the airport system nationwide for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

Accordingly, the department said that the locality has completed the draft planning of Bac Giang province for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, which is waiting for the Ministry of Planning and Investment’s appraisal.

In order to ensure the consistency and synchronization between the planning of Bac Giang province and the master plan on the development of the airport system nationwide for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, the department proposed the Ministry Transport and the consulting unit to make a supplementary planning and propose the Prime Minister allow the Kep airport, now a military airport, to become a dual-purpose one which will be used for both civilian and military purposes and include it in the master plan.

The department believed that the conversion is necessary due to the low density of airports in the region, especially in mountainous provinces (there are only a few civil airports in the North, namely Noi Bai in Hanoi, Cat Bi in Hai Phong city and Van Don in Quang Ninh province). It is forecast that in the coming time, the demand for transporting passengers and goods will increase rapidly. Currently, Bac Giang, Lang Son and neighboring provinces mainly use Noi Bai airport, which has suffered overloading. At the same time, the distance from the region to this airport is quite far (over 150km from Lang Son province and some remote areas of Bac Giang province).

Amid the boom of investment, especially FDI, in industrial development and tourism services at present, there is a huge demand for traveling to solve business and go to tourist hotspots. Furthermore, the need to transport goods to Lang Son border gates, as well as to serve production and people’s needs are also constantly increasing. If the Kep airport is put into use for civil purpose, it will promote trade, tourism and investment attraction, this creating a breakthrough in economic development of the region in general and Bac Giang in particular.
