Bac Giang: Stable food supply, reduced prices

Updated: 20:05, 31/03/2020
(BGO) - In the first days of implementing the Prime Minister's direction on the suspension of operation of services providing establishments, except for those supplying essential goods and services to prevent and combat the Covid-19 pandemic, supplies of food, foodstuff and daily necessities in Bac Giang have been stable. However, prices and purchasing power have fluctuated.

On the morning of March 30, a reporter from Bac Giang Newspaper surveyed a number of markets, supermarkets and shops selling food, foodstuff and essential necessities for the daily life of people. The survey showed these still operated normally, but the number of buyers fell.

Prices of pork, chicken and duck tended to decrease while those of crab and freshwater fish remained the same as usual...

Specifically, the price of live hog ranged from 81,000-82,000 VND per kg, down from 2,000-5,000 VND per kg compared to one week ago. The reason was that the number of market hogs in the province had increased and the Government had allowed importing pork to stabilize domestic prices.

Regarding poultry price, the price of hybrid ‘mia’ chicken (4 months old) in Yen The district ranged from 50,000-53,000 VND per kg; hybrid ‘ri’ chicken is sold for 58,000-60,000 VND per kg, about 5,000 VND lower than the same period in 2019. Duck prices in Hiep Hoa and Yen Dung districts varied from 26,000-28,000 per kg.

According to the Yen The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the district still has more than 1 million commercial chickens. Each day, only about 5,000-8,000 chickens are sold and supply is still abundant.

In markets in Bac Giang city, in the last two days, pork has been sold well. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, the owner of a pork shop at Ngo Quyen market, said that on March 28 and 29, the volume of pork sold was three times more than that in normal days (about 170kg per day) but on March 30, she sold only about 40kg. According to Tuyet, people changed their habit of going to the market as they bought goods enough for a week per trip.

Other food items such as crab, freshwater fish, seafood, and chicken were sold more slowly because people stored less fresh food than others.

According to business households at the Dinh Non wholesale poultry market in Lien Son commune (Tan Yen district), in recent days, many households have closed their shops. The remaining households could only sell from one hundred to several hundreds of kilograms of poultry every day, down 70 percent compared to normal days.

On this occasion, many food shops in Bac Giang city only see good sales at the weekend, with humble increases. At the moment, the price of rice fluctuates slightly. For example, Khang Dan rice price is 12,500 VND per kg (up 500 VND per kg); PC rice costs 15,000 VND per kg (up 500 VND per kg); fragrant Tam rice is sold for 20,000 VND per kg (an increase of 3,000 VND per kg).
