Bac Giang to improve infrastructure, urban space aiming at green, smart city

(BGO) - The municipal people’s committee of Bac Giang city and the provincial Department of Construction on 30 September jointly held a scientific conference on “Planning to build Bac Giang into green and smart city, development model of traffic networks and cultural institution attached to the province’s master plan in period of 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050”. 

Developing a convenient and environment friendly city

In his opening remark, Chairman of the municipal people’s committee Vu Tri Hai stressed, with its position as the heart of the province, Bac Giang city has gained rapid development in all fields with increasingly expanded urban space and improved people’s quality of life. It has been recognized one of the 30 bright, green and clean cities among 800 others nationwide by Association of cities in Vietnam for many consecutive years.

Development of smart city towards the goal of green growth in Vietnam generally and Bac Giang particularly is an necessary step to keep up with the global trend.

The Resolution of the 22nd municipal Party Congress in the tenure from 2020 to 2025 set out the 5-year development goal to build a rapidly and sustainably developed city towards green and smart city and accelerate completion of the criteria for the first- tier city.

Concentrating on building infrastructure, greening urban space

Many solutions were suggested by the experts to build a green and smart Bac Giang city. Particularly, MBA Nguyen Thi Hoang Diep suggested that Bac Giang city approach protecting, improving and saving natural resources and promoting environmental conditions in line with available national information technology (IT) programmes. After IT capacity of the government and people is developed, the green Bac Giang city will continue to invest in high technologies.

According to Assoc. Prof. Vu Thi Vinh, former Secretary General of the Association of cities in Vietnam, in order for green traffic development, the city needs to establish the city’s database center to allow seeking buses on smartphone, travelling control, using smart tickets for multiple means of public transportation and road signs.

Others recommended the city to promptly set up the urban database while building mechanism for information disseminating, updating and connecting. The urban traffic development must be attached to spatial organization and land use. The traffic planning must tend to smart traffic aiming to ending traffic congestion.

Besides, it is necessary to build and manage the rainwater drainage system for sustainable targets in response to the climate change. Regarding power supply management and urban lighting, it is essential to prioritize solar, wind and renewable energies for urban lighting.

Based on his experience, former permanent Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Lai Thanh Son identified some shortcomings in economic development of the city. He stressed, in coming time Bac Giang city needs to focus on service development. 

To that end, the city should make specific schemes with supporting policies in service sector, facilitate operation of the enterprises, production and business establishments while improving quality of human resources and services especially tourism services.

The opinions shared at the conference will be thoroughly grasped, studied and specified by Bac Giang city during making the city construction planning.
