Bac Ninh to host festival honouring Quan Ho love duet singing

A festival entitled ‘Travelling to the land of Quan Ho folk singing’, will open in the northern province of Bac Ninh on February 25.

Themed ‘The Land of Heritages – Essence and Identity’, the festival will honour intangible cultural heritages of Vietnam, that have been recognised by UNESCO, including Quan Ho (love duet) singing of Bac Ninh province, Xoan (Spring) singing of Phu Tho province, Vi Dam folk singing of Ha Tinh province, Hue royal court music, Gong cultural space of the Central Highlands region, and ‘Don Ca Tai Tu’ (Southern folk music) of Bac Lieu province.

The folk art forms will be delivered to the public by performers, vocalists and instrumentalists, from Bac Ninh, Ha Tinh, Phu To, Quang Nam, Dak Lak, Bac Lieu and Thua Thien Hue provinces.

The festival will also feature nearly 30 cultural and sporting activities, such as a spring press festival, water puppetry performances, various folk games, and a ceremony to present the ‘Meritorious Artist’ and ‘People’s Artist’ titles, to outstanding folklore art practitioners.

Bac Giang’s Quan Ho Cultural Association join hands to preserve and promote heritage
(BGO) - Established in 2016, the Quan Ho Cultural Association of Bac Giang province has become the common house of people who love and are able to perform and teach quan ho folk songs. With the criteria "strong in organization, good in expertise and beautiful in lifestyle", the association has contributed to preserving and promoting the national cultural heritage.
The friend-making custom in quan ho singing
(BGO) - Bac Giang is an ancient land which is home to quan ho (love duets) singing - an elegant hobby that has always been attractive and pervasive in the hearts of the people of the Kinh Bac region, especially those living on the two banks of Cau River, also known as "the river of quan ho". Notably, the practice of quan ho singing also preserves many traditional cultural beauties, including the friend-making custom.
Becoming famous from “Song Thuong singing contest”
(BGO)- Being trained and challenging themselves at “Song Thuong singing contest”, a number of singers have become more confident and gained success on their journey of art. For many champions at the contest, the days in Bac Giang left them unforgettable memory.
Bac Giang reviving “cheo” folk singing
The northern province of Bac Giang has long been known for “cheo” singing - a type of Vietnamese traditional opera. Regardless of age, local people all share a passion for traditional “cheo” performances.
Art clubs promote melodies of folklore Then singing
In recent years, Bac Kan provincial authorities have encouraged the establishment of ‘Then’ singing clubs in a bid to preserve and promote the ‘Then’ practice of Vietnam’s ethnic groups of Tay, Nung, Thai, which was named in the UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity.
