Boiling eggs in record-breaking hot spring

Updated: 17:36, 24/02/2025

On a cold day, as northern Vietnam remains in a deep chill and news of upcoming humid weather looms, nothing beats grabbing a backpack and escaping the city to find relaxation amidst the mountains while enjoying a peaceful retreat. Bang hot spring is the perfect destination for such an experience.

Located in Chuon Village, Kim Thuy Commune, Le Thuy District, Quang Binh Province, Bang Hot Spring lies deep in the Truong Son Mountain Range, about 50 km southwest of Dong Hoi City.

Boiling eggs at over 100 degrees Celsius.

During the resistance war against the US, Chuon Hamlet was closely associated with the Bru-Van Kieu ethnic minority people, who bore the Ho surname in their steadfast loyalty to the Party.

For many years, this hot spring, with its record-breaking heat, quietly flowed through the lush forest canopy. It was not until later that people discovered that the thin veil of steam rising from the stream indicated an exceptionally high boiling point.

In 2023, Bang hot spring was officially recognised as Vietnam's hottest natural hot spring. According to a 1993 survey by the Ministry of Water Resources, some geothermal vents within the stream were recorded at an astonishing 105 degrees Celsius.

Boiling eggs at the source of Bang spring is a unique experience. There are many hot mineral springs where people can cook eggs, but each has a different boiling point, which affects the cooking time.

For example, Than Tai Hot Spring (in Hoa Vang District, Da Nang City, has a maximum temperature of 75 degrees Celsius, requiring 15 minutes to fully cook an egg.

Hoi Van hot spring (in Phu Cat District, Binh Dinh Province) reaches 85 degrees Celsius, where it takes 10 minutes to cook eggs. Meanwhile, Triem Duc hot spring (in Dong Xuan District, Phu Yen Province), with a maximum temperature of 70 degrees Celsius, requires 20 minutes for a fully boiled egg.

However, at Bang hot spring, where the temperature exceeds 100 degrees Celsius, eggs can be boiled in just 6-8 minutes. If you prefer soft-boiled eggs, placing them in a bubbling vent only takes 4-5 minutes. Interestingly, different water pockets within the same spring yield different results, even when the eggs are boiled for the same duration.

Despite the construction of a Japanese-style onsen resort at Bang Hot Spring in late 2023, the spring’s source remains untouched for visitors to experience natural egg boiling.

As you approach the source, a veil of steam blankets the area, rising in swirling waves. A passing gust of wind can momentarily obscure everything in mist.

On a day like this, sitting by the hot spring in the middle of the forest, enjoying a few freshly boiled eggs, one might find that even the grey sky above feels like a minor detail in an otherwise serene experience.
