'Hai Phuong' established as highest-grossing film of Vietnamese cinema

“Hai Phuong” (Furie), an action movie by director Le Van Kiet starring actress Ngo Thanh Van, has become the highest-grossing film in Vietnam so far as it has earned more than VND200 billion after its premiere four weeks ago.

The film tells the breath-taking journey of a single mom named Hai Phuong to save her daughter, Mai, from kidnappers who work in the transnational crime of kidnapping and organ trafficking.

"Hai Phuong' tells the breath-taking journey of a single mom to save her daughter from kidnappers.

Hai Phuong, who was an ex-gangster, has only 14 hours to chase the kidnappers from Can Tho to Ho Chi Minh City and Phan Thiet to save Mai. Any mistake she makes could end up costing her life and that of her daughter.

The film was labelled C18 (Restricted for audiences aged 18 years or above).

According to the film’s leading actress, Ngo Thanh Van, also known as Veronica Ngo, although ‘Hai Phuong’ was set in a one-day journey on the screen, the filming took place over six weeks in reality with an average of 18 working hours per day.

After two weeks of premiere in Vietnam, on February 22 the film hit the big screen in the US and Canada. It will head to the Chinese market in the near future, according to the producer.

The movie has won enthusiastic appreciation from audiences and film critics, both at home and abroad.

Discovery to broadcast new film on Vietnam
A documentary titled “Vietnam: Connecting East Africa” will be broadcast on the Discovery East Africa channel on December 27 for the first time, and on the Discovery Southeast Asia three days later.
