Hanoi’s Old Quarter to host various activities during April 30-May Day holidays

Updated: 15:32, 22/04/2019
The Management Board of Hanoi’s Old Quarter on April 19 announced a range of events to be held in celebration of the 44th anniversary of the South Liberation and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975-2019) and May Day.

This year’s celebrations will look towards honouring artisans and advertising craft villages whose activities are attached to Hanoi’s traditional craft streets.

One of the highlights will be the introduction of traditional crafts, entitled “Vietnam’s Do paper now and past”, at Kim Ngan temple in Hang Bat Street, Hoan Kiem District on April 24-25.

The Phung Hung Street mural space will be a venue for many interesting events during the April 30-May Day holidays.

Accordingly, the history of the Do paper production craft as well as Do paper production stages and tools will be introduced to the public. Besides, visitors will also have the chance to talk with artisans from some traditional paper villages.

Painter Do Ngoc Han said that Do paper is a means of conveying information and storing knowledge in many fields, including medicine and scientific subjects, and is the material formerly used to make paintings and literary works. Do paper is closely associated with the cultural and civilisation achievements of Dai Viet (a feudal name of Vietnam). The introduction of the Do paper craft aims to raise public understanding and awareness of this kind of traditional paper.

A cultural programme, themed “Quintessence of Vietnamese crafts”, will be held by the Old Quarter Management Board around the Phung Hung Street mural space from April 27 to May 1, aiming to honour artisans and craftsmen who have contributed to preserving heritage values. Products from some of Hanoi’s outstanding craft villages, such as Van Phuc silk, Bat Trang pottery, Ha Thai lacquer, Chuong conical hats and Phu Vinh bamboo and rattan, will be on display during the event.

Also within the Phung Hung Street mural space, the organising committee will introduce a “Spring-Summer 2019” collection by Hanoi fashion designers, in addition to organising traditional musical programmes on the evenings between April 27 and May 1.

The last event of the series of celebrations will be a painting exhibition, entitled “War and peace”, at the Hanoi Old Quarter Cultural Exchange Centre from April 28 to May 9. The event will showcase paintings and propaganda paintings on the historical events of the nation, alongside portraits of Vietnamese soldiers and paintings depicting Vietnam’s land and people in peace time.
