Japan breaks world Internet speed record by 25%

Updated: 12:04, 06/07/2024

Japan has broken the global Internet speed record at 402 Tbps, surpassing the previous record of 321 Tbps by 25%.

The data transmission speed, achieved in a laboratory at Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, was realized through a new technique that "unlocks previously inaccessible wavelength ranges of existing infrastructure," Nextshark reported this week.

Specifically, researchers amplified data signals to take full advantage of the capabilities to transmit data by fiber optic cables, thus increasing the transmission bandwidth across 50 km of fiber optic cables, Tom’s Guide reported.

Theoretically, such a speed would allow 12,500 films to be downloaded within the span of a single second. Researchers said they hoped this speed would be achievable in everyday society in the near future.

The new record was presented at the 47th International Conference on Optical Fiber Communications in March.
