Japan officially opens door for Vietnamese fresh lychee
According to Vietnamese Plant Protection Department (VPPD), the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) has sent a letter to the VPPD informing to open door to directly import this fruit into Japan.
The lychee has chance to be exported to Japanese market in 2020. |
The letter was enclosed with regulations on imported plant quarantine for Vietnamese lychee, which took effect from December 15, 2019.
This is the result of over five years of negotiation efforts between the VPPD and the MAFF together with many strict experiments which were done to ensure the Japanese plant quarantine to Vietnamese lychee.
Accordingly, Vietnamese lychee exported to Japan must be grown in orchards supervised and granted area codes by the VPPD, and comply with Japan’s regulations on plant quarantine and food safety.
The exported batches of lychee must be packed and treated with Methyl Bromide at facilities recognised by the VPPD and the MAFF with the minimum dosage of 32g per cubic meter for two hours under the supervision of Vietnamese and Japanese plant quarantine officers. Also, they must be enclosed with a phytosanitary certificate issued by the VPPD.
The VPPD said it will continue coordinating with businesses to soon complete preparatory work and seek partners to export the first batch of fresh lychee to Japan in 2020.
The 2019 lychee crop in Bac Giang province was successful with total of 147,000 tonnes of fruits consumed across the province, bringing record revenue of over 6.3 trillion VND (272.6 million USD), highest ever to date, up over 500 billion VND (21.6 million USD) comparing to last year figure.
Adding to the major market of China, the lychee has been exported to big markets of Middle East, EU, Russia, the U.S, Canada, Japan, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Australia...
Notably, 2019 was the first year Luc Ngan district had cultivated 20 hectares of organic lychee. The Deputy Chairman of Luc Ngan district People’s Committee Cao Van Hoan said: “The lychee orchards under the project were installed camera to supervise together with electronic caring dairy to ensure the safety growing and caring procedure”.
It was the first time the enterprise and farmer had coordinated to produce the high quality organic lychee packed in luxury paper box that was sold at a dream price of 200,000 VND (8.65 USD) per box of 12 fruits, equal to 600,000 VND (26 USD) per kilogram.
