Journey of poor girl to overcome difficulties in America

Updated: 19:04, 11/06/2024

BAC GIANG- Her willpower and ceaseless efforts helped Pham Thi Diem Phuong (born in 1998) in Duc Lien residential group, Hong Thai ward, Viet Yen township overcome numerous difficulties. With her excellent study results, the young girl has gained initial success in working and living when she is co-owner of 21 apartments in the US.

Her father passed away when she was only 2. Her mother had to do both farm work and hired work to raise and educate her daughter. The courageous little girl left her home town to Hanoi capital to study at the Foreign Language Specialized High School under the University of Foreign Languages (Hanoi National University) when she was just 15.

While most of her classmates have studied English at international schools since they were young, Phuong had to self-study. However, the difficulty has motivated her to make more efforts to win scholarships to cover her living expenses.

When she was a high school student, Phuong was among 5 Vietnamese students winning the “Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Programme” sponsored by the US government and she had opportunity to go abroad to exchange with international friends, which forged her to discover and conquer knowledge overseas.

In 2016, Phuong was the only Vietnamese student winning the full scholarship for the university programme in Berea College (Kentucky, USA) majoring in Mathematics and Economics. The scholarship helped Phuong to cover the study and living expenses.

Graduating from university in 2020 amid Covid-19 outbreak, Phuong and her mates faced difficulties in seeking jobs. Phuong decided to work for a real estate company in Las Vegas.

Without the scholarships after graduating from the university, she had only 500 USD left after paying the rent for the first month. In order to stay, Phuong determined to do her job well. Phuong patiently called hundreds of phone calls to customers ever day even at weekend. Phuong made a list of potential clients among countless refusal.

She noted down all customers’ demand to introduce suitable products to them. She could sell the first houses since the 2nd month working. After 3 months, she became the sale person reaching the highest sales volume in the company.

Phuong bought 2 houses valued about 500,000- 650,000 USD per each from her earnings and contributed capital with her friend to buy 19 apartments. The apartments are for long-term rentals bringing big income.

During doing real estate business, Phuong was introduced to a mortgage lending firm by her loyal customer. Thanks to the gained experience, Phuong is now a senior manager of Loan Factory specializing in this sector.

Phuong was also invited to study master programme in real estate development at Columbia University (New York), which is ranked 2nd among the best universities in the US in real estate major.

Her efforts in studying, working and living come from her desire for success and earning money to take care of her mother for a full life. Although she has been soon self-reliant, her mother is the shoulder to lean on and the motivation for her striving, said Phuong.

During her overseas study, Phuong had saved money from the scholarship and part-time jobs to send to her mother. In 2020, Phuong hired a designer and sent money to her mother to build a luxurious villa on an area of 200 square metre replacing the old house.

Phuong got a shocking news in 2021 that her mother suffered from cancer. She could not go home that time to visit her mother due to complicated developments of Covid-19 pandemic. She turned her anxiety about her mother’s health into the great motivation to earn much money to send to her mother for treatment.

From the other side of the world, she searched for information and contacted with good doctors in Vietnam through email to share about her condition and express her wishes. Fortunately, the doctors in Vietnam wholeheartedly supported and treated Phuong’s mother. After her mother recovered, Phuong took her to the US to stay there for some months and traveled with her to everywhere to make her happy and improve her health.

Although she has gained initial success, Phuong will never forget the difficult time by active participation in voluntary activities. Currently, Phuong is sponsoring monthly study expenses for a needy student in Luc Ngan district to help him reach his dream like she could do before.
