Little flute “artist” Nguyen Bao Nam
“Nam liked watching the art programs especially solo flute performances when he was only 3 or 4 years old. Once we were travelling, I saw my son crazy about the bamboo flute at the souvenir store so I bought him as a gift. He often asked us to open the solo flute performances on internet for him to listen and learn to play. At first, he just produced short and discrete sounds. Then, he kept constantly self-practising, thereby, he could play flute with rhythmic sounds of the popular songs and symphonies”, said Bao Nam’s father Nguyen Van Ngoan.

As realising their son’s passion for flute, Ngoan and his wife found Meritorious Artist Duc Lien (a famous artist in traditional arts of Vietnam National Music, Song and Dance Theatre) to ask him to teach Bao Nam in Hanoi. Bao Nam has 4 classes per month at weekends and he is progressing very well.
If he could play just a piece of music at the very beginning, now Nam can play smoothly the whole songs. Many people were admired at his performances at a number of competitions and festivals when this talented boy could play 5 types of flutes including sao meo (H’mong flute), sao bau (gourd flute), sao tieu (bamboo flute) and dan moi (jew’s harp).
At the “Giai dieu tuoi hong” contest (a music contest for teenagers) organized in March at district level, Nam’s flute performance “Mua xuan que huong” (Spring in the hometown) won the first prize.
At the “Little but Special” contest in July 2018, the first contest in Vietnam seeking for little talents from 3 to 10 years old nationwide, this 9-year old boy wowed the audiences for his confident performances with 5 consecutive songs including Di hoc (going to school), Hoa thom buom luon (fragrant flowers and flying butterflies), Tren duong chien thang (on the way to victory), Ben Thuong Hai (Shanghai song) and Xuan ve tren ban Meo (spring on H’mong Village). Although he had to stop at the second round, he left good impression on traditional music lovers.
Currently, this little student is carefully preparing for the provincial “Giai dieu tuoi hong” contest in middle May 2019.
In order to cherish his dream to become an excellent flute artist, he spends one hour per day practising and goes to Hanoi every weekends for further practice. According to teacher Dinh Thi Soan, the principal of Tang Tien primary school, Nam still gains good academic results although he regularly takes part in many art performances inside and outside of the district.
