Long Thanh airport set to serve first flight in September 2025

Updated: 14:22, 13/09/2022
Vietnam's biggest airport to be, Long Thanh, must enter service on the National Day of Sept. 2 in 2025, the Ministry of Transport has ordered.

The ministry has placed the order to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) after its inspection team found that work to build the airport in Dong Nai Province that borders Ho Chi Minh City has fallen behind schedule.

The ACV, the project investor, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam should work together to ensure that Long Thanh could serve the first flight on Sept. 2, 2025, the ministry said.

Costing an estimated $16 billion, Long Thanh airport is designed to serve 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo per year.

Work on the airport began on Jan. 5 last year after many years of preparations and lengthy land acquisitions.

As scheduled, the airport's first phase would be put into use in 2025.

Once operating, it will replace HCMC's Tan Son Nhat to become the biggest airport in Vietnam.

The original deadline for its opening was December 2025, but Lai Xuan Thanh, ACV chairman, said in January work would be completed six months ahead of schedule.

In February, a year after work began, only fencing and demining had occurred, causing Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to complain over the progress.
