Lychee crop 2021: Promoting flexible connections, tapping markets

Updated: 20:18, 22/06/2021
(BGO) - In response to the complicated developments of the Covid-19 epidemic, Luc Ngan district (Bac Giang province) has coordinated to flexibly implement lychee consumption scenarios in 2021 with many new features. As a result, up to now, the district has sold more than 70 percent of the lychee volume with large purchasing power and high selling prices both at home and abroad.

Promoting connections, tapping many selling channels

Due to the impact of the epidemic, Chinese traders, even though they had registered to go to Luc Ngan to buy lychees, were not allowed to enter the country. Overcoming this obstacle, many Chinese and Vietnamese traders chose a new method: the Chinese partners actively pay part of the money in advance for Vietnamese traders to purchase and pack lychees. When the lychee trucks reach the border gate, the buyers will pay the remaining amount.

Vice Chairman of the district People's Committee Luc Ngan Nguyen The Thi said that along with export, the new features in the district's lychee sale this year were to promote domestic consumption and online selling (on e-commerce platforms and via phone calls); and to increase the amount of dried lychee by supporting people in building more drying kilns.

At the same time, the district People's Committee coordinated with the Department of Industry and Trade, ministries, central agencies, localities, socio-political organizations, enterprises and cooperatives inside and outside the province in selling Luc Ngan lychees.

Many enterprises with a large number of employees such as: Vietnam Coal-Mineral Industry Group; Samsung Electronics Vietnam Co., Ltd; Viettel Military Telecommunications Group, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group, and garment enterprises have signed contracts to purchase tens of thousands of tonnes of lychees to serve in workers' meals...

The People's Committees of many provinces and cities as well as agencies and organizations in the country have joined hands to sell lychees for Luc Ngan. As a result, by the end of June 20, the whole district had sold nearly 80,000 out of more than 120,000 tonnes of lychees. The average selling price of fresh lychee ranged from 12,000 VND to 30,000 VND (0.52-1.3 USD) per kg, while that of dried lychee was from 35,000 VND to more than 50,000 VND (1.52-2.17 USD) per kg.

Simultaneously activating scenarios

If in the previous crops, nearly 60 percent of Luc Ngan's lychees was exported, this crop witnessed a reversal with 60 percent of lychees consumed domestically. Currently, the amount of lychees sold at e-commerce platforms, online supermarket systems, and convenience stores has reached nearly 10,000 tonnes, three times higher than 2020. The volume of fresh lychees for drying hit 22,000 tonnes, many times higher than the previous crop.

According to Director of the Department of Industry and Trade Tran Quang Tan, the above results were achieved thanks to the cooperation of agencies and sectors from the central to local levels, helping Luc Ngan people with lychee selling.

Right from the beginning of the crop, Bac Giang has actively connected and inked 48 cooperation agreements on lychee consumption for more than 61,000 tonnes of lychees with trading centers, wholesale markets, supermarkets, domestic and foreign enterprises and cooperatives instead of signing memoranda of understanding as in previous years. Trade counselors and embassies of many countries such as China, Japan, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Australia and the EU all have created maximum conditions for Bac Giang to sell lychees.

Along with that was the careful preparation and flexible and synchronous implementation of lychee consumption scenarios in the context of both preventing the pandemic and developing production. Although 12 communes of Luc Ngan are implementing social distancing to prevent and control the Covid-19 epidemic, lychee consumption is still favorable. Most of the lychees in these communes have basically been sold, and the remaining few will be dried. In the remaining 17 communes, traders still come to buy lychees normally.

Only more than 10 days left until the end of the lychee crop 2021, as the Covid-19 epidemic has been controlled but there is still high risk of infection, with careful preparation and synchronously deployment of lychee consumption scenarios, especially the engagement of the whole political system, it is sure that Luc Ngan will enjoy a successful lychee crop.

Lychee’s journey to abroad

Bac Giang compiles three scenarios for lychee consumption amid Covid-19
The northern province of Bac Giang, dubbed Vietnam’s “kingdom of lychee”, has devised three scenarios for the sales of its staple in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The new position of Bac Giang lychee
(BGO) - Bac Giang lychee is famous throughout the country and abroad, and gains a foothold in the market. Amid difficulties from the outbreak of Covid-19, lychee was still sold smoothly and even accessed many new high-end and fastidious markets, thereby affirming its position that few other agricultural products have obtained.
“Thieu” lychees introduced on e-commerce floors
The launching of “thieu” lychees on e-commerce floors in May and early June 2021 has received an active response from farmers and enterprises, marking a big change in the process of purchasing and consuming agricultural products.
Luc Ngan, inviting safe lychee area
(BGO) –This year, Luc Ngan district (Bac Giang province) enjoys a bumper lychee season. Red colour of ripening lychees overwhelms every village from delta to high land areas. Amid the complicated development of Covid-19 pandemic, the authority and people in Luc Ngan have taken great efforts to protect the safe lychee area. Each sweet fruit soaked with the farmers’ sweat seems to invite visitors near and far to the kingdom of lychees.
