The design is part of Cong Tri's Spring/Summer 2020 collection, presented at New York Fashion Week in September 2019.

Richie's VMAs outfit was one of the best looks at the ceremony, according to U.S. fashion mag Harper's Bazaar. American newspaper New York Post said the star "took over the virtual red carpet" with her punk princess vibes in Cong Tri’s gown.

A representative of Cong Tri said Richie's team had contacted him, saying the star wanted to don Tri's dress for the VMAs night. The green minidress fitted the star perfectly and was sent to her one day before the event. Many Vietnamese stars had previously also appeared in the design.

After New York Fashion Week, Cong Tri’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection stayed in the U.S. for celebrities to wear at events and photoshoots for Vogue. Many international stars have chosen Tri's designs, such as singer Lizzo, Kelly Rowland, actress Sandra Oh, Margot Robbie, etc.

MTV VMAs 2020, an annual award presented by cable channel MTV to honor the best in the music video medium, is the first-ever major award show hosted during the Covid-19 pandemic. To limit crowds, the event was organized in a remote location, with performances pre-taped or staged at different locations throughout New York City.

Nicole Richie is an American television personality, fashion designer and actress. She got famous for her role in the reality television series "The Simple Life."
