Provincial Vice Chairman: Expanding connectivity, bringing Bac Giang agricultural products to US market

Updated: 14:58, 25/05/2022
(BGO) - Within the framework of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit to the US to attend the ASEAN-US Special Summit, Bac Giang province deployed a number of activities to promote local agricultural products, especially lychee. Bac Giang Newspaper had an interview with Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Phan The Tuan right after he finished the successful working trip to the US.

Could you tell the results of your US working trip?

It can be said that Bac Giang province was very honored to be the only locality to have representatives accompanying Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the high-ranking delegation of Vietnam during the trip to attend the ASEAN-US Special Summit.

Agricultural products of Bac Giang province displayed at the event draw interest from many delegates.

In the US, provincial representatives attended a number of seminars and dialogues, directly exchanging and working with many large enterprises and partners of both Vietnam and the US such as retailer Walmart, Pepsi Group, and Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Company to introduce and promote the potential, strengths, and opportunities for investment cooperation and consumption of Bac Giang's agricultural products in the US market.

Through contacts with US partners, we have gained more information and better understood the US side's regulations and requirements for product quality, thereby forming the province’s orientations for production development and processing of agricultural products.

Especially, during this working trip, we signed a number of Memoranda of Understanding with Vietnam Airlines Corporation (Vietnam Airlines) and US partners like Emission Resource Group Inc. and the Association of Vietnamese Entrepreneurs in the US. This will be a premise for the formation and development of linkage chains in selling agricultural products of the province, as well as for promoting the export of agricultural products, especially lychee, to the US market in the coming time.

By promoting the consumption of agricultural products in the US this time, what requirements does the US side set for imported agricultural products and what do we need to do to boost exports to the US market?

Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Phan The Tuan and representatives of Vietnam Airlines and Emission Resources (US) exchange a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in exporting lychee and other agricultural products to the US.

First of all, we must affirm that the US is a market with very high requirements for quality of imported agricultural products. In order to enter this market, farm produce must pass very strict standards and technical barriers from production to preservation, processing, packaging, and traceability. Especially fresh agricultural products must be irradiated to kill harmful insects…

However, basically now we have met their requirements and in fact, fresh lychee from the province was also exported to the US market a number of years ago.

So what we have to do now is to standardize the process and expand the production, processing, preservation and packaging models, ensuring the quantity and quality in line with US requirements.

What are your expectations of the export of the province’s agricultural products in general and lychee in particular to the US market in the near future?

I think the US is a potential market with many opportunities for us to boost agricultural exports.

At meetings and contacts during the recent working trip, Bac Giang's agricultural products have received the attention of many US businesses and partners, not only lychee but also a number of other strong agricultural products.

We highly expect that from this 2022 lychee crop, we can increase the lychee export volume to the US market. In addition, there will be more products of the province to be exported to this market in the coming time.

Thank you very much!
