Quang Nam ends social distancing after nine-day clean streak

Updated: 15:44, 28/08/2020
Quang Nam Province, home to ancient town Hoi An in central Vietnam, ended social distancing on Friday morning after recording no new Covid-19 cases in nine days.

The social distancing ended specifically in Duy Xuyen District, Dien Ban Town and Hoi An, making them the last Quang Nam localities to do so.

While public gatherings of more than two are no longer banned, festivals, religious events, sports and other activities are still not allowed. Non-essential services like beauty parlors, clubs and bars remain closed. Public transport between Quang Nam and neighboring Da Nang City, the epicenter of Vietnam's second coronavirus wave, is still suspended.

Businesses like restaurants and hotels are allowed to open, but must provide protective suits to all employees, alongside hand sanitizer and body temperature checks for customers. Masks are still required while going out, and so is appropriate distancing between people, of at least a meter apart.

Quang Nam began deploying social distancing measures in late July as its tally of new Covid-19 cases grew, starting with Hoi An on July 31 and Dien Ban Town, Dai Loc, Duy Xuyen, Thang Binh and Que Son Districts a day after. Que Son, Thang Binh and Dai Loc had ended their social distancing in mid-August.

The province has recorded 96 local Covid-19 infections since July 25, when Vietnam reported its first local transmission in over three months. Quang Nam has recorded three Covid-19 fatalities so far out of the country's 30.

Vietnam has had 1,036 Covid-19 cases so far, 367 remaining active.
