Spreading cultural values through OCOP products

BAC GIANG - Participating in the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, many products are empowered and obtain a place on the market, helping rural people increase their income. Moreover, OCOP products also contribute to preserving and spreading traditional local culture in Bac Giang province.

“Storyteller” of local culture

Huong Son commune in Lang Giang district has nearly 60% of the population are ethnic minorities (Tay, Nung...). On every special occasion like Tet festival or important day, local people make colorful sticky rice, banh gio, banh gai... to offer to the ancestors.

With the desire to preserve and spread the value of traditional culinary culture, the People's Committee of Huong Son commune assigned the Commune Farmers' Association to support and establish of the culinary cooperative group "Fragrance of the Mountain". In 2023, the Cooperative Group's colorful sticky rice product was recognized as 3 star OCOP product.

Contributing to spreading local culinary culture, the Cooperative Group regularly displays and promotes products at many events inside and outside the commune. In addition, the Cooperative Group also coordinates to organize event for local students to experience and learn how to make this dish in extracurricular classes and study hours associated with production labor.

Meanwhile, Lang Giang district currently has 27 OCOP products. Besides colorful sticky rice, many other products also contain traditional cultural stories such as Huong Son pineapples that were grown locally since the 60s of the 20th century. Now thanks to application of technical advances, local farmers can grow the crop and harvest the sweet fruits around the year.

The special Nam The Chu rice noodle product of Chu Nam The Noodle Production and Consumption Cooperative in Luc Ngan is recognized as 3 star OCOP product.

Yen The's mountainous countryside is also well known to many people thanks to its cultural stories, rich in human values, conveyed by "storytellers" who are OCOP products.

Cao Lan smoked pork of Cao Lan Agriculture and Services Cooperative in Nghe village, Xuan Luong commune is one of them. Through many generations, this dish still retains its unique flavor thanks to the secret "passed down from father to son".

Building differentiated product story

To date, Bac Giang has 290 OCOP products rated at least 3 stars (an increase of 85 products compared to 2022, exceeding 60 products compared to the plan). Most products are unique, maximize the advantages and potentials of each locality and craft village as well as profound cultural value.

Typical OCOP products of Hiep Hoa district are displayed and introduced at the Provincial Convention Center.

Traditional cultural elements and regional characteristics are often clearly expressed through product stories. According to Le Ba Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, one of the outstanding results of the OCOP Program is to preserve and widespread the unique cultural values ​​of each locality.

Currently, Bac Giang province is prioritizing to develop some groups of OCOP products such as agriculture; non-agricultural; unique, traditional and advantageous services in each locality; promote internal strength, add value and associate with community development.

Following the orientation, localities pay due attention to developing raw material areas, deep processing to increase product value; improving designs and packaging to meet market needs; linking to trade and tourism promotion activities towards smooth consumption. At the same time, they build a unique, meaningful product story imbued with local cultural identity to first "sell" the story, then sell the product.
