The three day event was jointly organized by the People's Committee of Tri Yen commune, the Executive Board of the Yen Dung district Buddhist Association and head monk of Vinh Nghiem pagoda from March 21 to 23 (or lunar February 12 to 14).

The opening ceremony was started with a procession of offerings in line with pagoda rituals performed by hundreds of people from La Trung, La Thuong and La Ha villages in the commune.

Its highlight was a special art program with the epic performance "Vinh Nghiem Ancient Pagoda" performed by the Vietnam National Tuong Theater, attracting a large number of people, tourists, monks, nuns and Buddhist followers.

The dance recreates the image of head monk Thich Thanh Tan at Vinh Nghiem Pagoda during the anti-French period.

In addition to the art program, the 3 day festival features many cultural activities, sports, folk games of swinging, jumping on a sack, catching ducks blindfolded… Also, visitors can do calligraphy and experience woodblock printing.

The event also consists of the freestyle and ethnic wrestling tournaments as well as a tug-of-war championship, luring more than 100 athletes from 9 out of 10 districts, township and city in the province.

300,000 tourist arrivals flock to Vinh Nghiem pagoda festival

(BGO)- During the 3-day festival this year, Vinh Nghiem pagoda in Tri Yen commune, Yen Dung district, Bac Giang province recorded the highest number of visitors at about 300,000 arrivals.

Pilgrimage to ancient Vinh Nghiem pagoda

Vinh Nghiem Pagoda was built in the Ly Dynasty in the 11th century under the reign of King Ly Thai To (1010-1028) in the village of Duc La, Tri Yen Commune, Yen Dung District, about 80km from Hanoi. The pagoda is considered the first Buddhism university of Vietnam, and the place of origin for Truc Lam Zen Buddhism, playing an important role in the history of Buddhism in Vietnam general and in the Tran Dynasty in particular.
